Re: IT HAS ARRIVED
Yeah, but they make 'em. 400 watts solid state isn't very loud for a bass amp.

400 watts solid state for bass is more than enough. You only REALLY need 100 for band practicing, any less is too little, though. I, of course, like lots of power!

Re: IT HAS ARRIVED
My 180 watt Behringer head with a Hartke 1*15 cab was definitely not enough, couldn't hear myself in a rock band most the time (and we play pretty soft, have a jazz drummer and keyboardist). 300 watts is sufficient on stage generally, I think... definitely depends on the cab as well.

"Behringer" is the key word here. No offense! I worked in musical inst. retail and their amps are worthless. All they are is bad copies of something else with the cheapest parts available. I compared a Roland kybrd amp to a behringer kybrd amp by turning them both all the way up with nothing plugged in. The Roland did hum but it seemed reasonable. The behringer hiss so loud i thought it was going to blow up! Immediately i went to every behringer amp in the store and did the same test... I got the same exact result from all of them.FireAarro wrote: My 180 watt Behringer head with a Hartke 1*15 cab was definitely not enough, couldn't hear myself in a rock band most the time (and we play pretty soft, have a jazz drummer and keyboardist). 300 watts is sufficient on stage generally, I think... definitely depends on the cab as well.

Re: IT HAS ARRIVED
when comes to bass amp, it seems that you need more power to get those low frequencies heard. i think thats why alot of bass heads are solid state. you can fit tons of little mosfets on a board instead of cramming like 4 pairs of power tubes plus a huge transformer in a head box.
either way, i had rehearsal on thursday and i played with a guy that has a blues deville 2x12 and a guy that was playing bass through an svt 4 pro. they kept asking me to turn sown and i wasnt even a quarter up on the master volume. and it sounds AMAZING.

Yeah, you need more power to get the low end clear without distorting. Most bass players like to have tons of headroom (I really don't).
As for power tubes, it all depends what kind of valves you're using - my current favourite amp (the ampeg SVT-VR) uses 6 6550 valves to pump out 300W.
Of course, people always forget about cab size and speaker efficiency in these kind of situations, too. It can have a massive effect on the volume of your amp.

Re: IT HAS ARRIVED
yeah you are right, having efficient speakers and the correct size/configuration really makes a difference, especially when it comes to what frequencies are being pushed more. a bass cab with 4 10's is natuarally gonna pump out more mids than a 1x15, but less bass.
i like my basslines slightly gritty for most applications, but fuzzed out other times.

Re: IT HAS ARRIVED
Point taken, that rig has nice tone at low levels though, better than my new amp at that volume. The cab is pretty crappy too. I still don't think a 100 watt SS amp is enough for a loud band. My keyboardist from the above mentioned band just replaced his $1000 keyboard amp with a Behringer one half the price and he reckons it's great for the price, we'll see how it holds up...OffYourFace wrote:"Behringer" is the key word here. When I gigged regularly as a bassist I used a 400W SS head which wasn't particularly loud even in a three-piece band.chrisjedijane wrote: Yeah, you need more power to get the low end clear without distorting. Most bass players like to have tons of headroom (I really don't).
A lot of guys use a tube preamp to warm up the sound rather than cart around a valve bass head.

Re: IT HAS ARRIVED
Well, he is another band called VKNGS that turn the amps they have up to 10. I think he uses a Marshall Major and 2 4X12 cabs in that band. Probably the loudest band in Halifax right now.
I think Im trading my AC30CCH and 4X12 cab for a Vox AC30CC2 combo. The 4xx12 takes up a lot of room in the office.
