I was walking round the rehearsal studio today and saw that a 4x10 extension cab for a bass amp is by this maker...there is also a head laying around the back, outside (!!) so that probably means it's broken....

Typically the are easy to fix. Pull that head inside!

The bass player in my old band played through an H|H 115W combo (I think it was 115W). It was good amp - he just bought it cos it was cheap and reasonably loud. I believe it cost him about £60.

You don't see too many of them around - this was a pawn shop find.

I'll ask the guy who owns the rehearsal space what the deal with it is :)

I know, I know. Bear in mind that H||H stopped making electronics long ago and was folded into (or bought out by) Laney - this is the very early 80s, which was past their good valve days. I think they've kept the brand alive just for speakers, which is odd since H||H was always known for its power amplification (apparently you can't find a BBC studio in the UK without their power amps - they last forever). Why they made the decision to do that is a mystery to me. But then again the whole Laney brand seems to have sunk a bit since the 70s when they made top-grade stuff. Now they make a few decent things (I like the looks of their Vox copies) but the bulk of their stuff is cheap bee-in-a-can noisemaker gear.  :'(

I wouldn't entirely agree with your assesment of Laney - I should clarify - the speakers were shit, not the actual amps! I use a LC30II now, and it is actually a really good sounding amp. I did have to send it back immediately for a cold-soldered joint which caused the amp to cut out during a big gig - and one of the feet fell off...  ::) However, it sounds great. The LC15s I had with the HlH speakers in sounded great through extension cabinets too... I dunno about their solid state stuff though. That may sound like a bee in a can, but the valve amps certainly don't...

I understand - it's just that the main thrust of Laney in the last few years is in the low-cost SS area, not the tube/valve stuff. I have heard very good things about the Vox-ish model (VC30) in its various setups (2x12, 2x10, 1x12 etc). I suspect their other tube stuff is also good. But their 70s stuff is quite sought after and has some hardcore devotees.

quite sought after?  really?  Ive had a couple of those pro tube 50 models that I suspected were the most famous, and never paid more than 200 bucks for em, and didnt get much more for em either, maybe 400 bucks is the outer limit.  But I suppose if theres a lot of them, or if people are searching them out for a good sounding tube amp for 200 bucks, that makes sense:)

The Pro Tubes were made in the 1980s, if I recall correctly. I was referring to the late 60s - early 70s stuff which was up on par with Marshalls of the same era made from top-grade components (Patridge transformers, etc).

There were also a series of amps known as the "Klipp" series that are hot sales-wise - you won't get one of those for a few hundred bucks.
