Bassman 100 70's

I have seen a couple Bassman users around here, but good amp or not? I have a Deville and I am looking to buy another amp.

Mewithoutus had a Bassman and loved it, but then he got a Vox AC30CC and seemed to like that a lot more. But he's gone now.

I have a 70's Bassman 100 and I like it alot. I haven't used it in some years though, because It's really loud and I haven't been playing in an actual band (with a decent practice space) since god knows when - That is about to change though and I long for plugin in the Bassman again.

When I was active I used it with the original cabinet or a 70's 4x12 Malmberg (sort of an Orange clone IIRC) that sounded really great. I found it neccesary to use a "powersoak" or similiar, because it broke at a really loud volume.

I've got a Bassman 70 which is along the same lines.

Pretty nice amp, I enjoy it on both bass and guitar. One of my friends once described the basic tone as "the sound of your guitar strummed unamplified, just louder" and I kind of agree with that assessment. It's very honest, and not a lot of frills. Since I use a lot of effects pedals, it's pretty good for me.
Usually pretty bulletproof too, unless you're stupid (::whistles:: )and happen to forget to plug it into your cabinet when you turn it on...

my old guitar player had one, and it was brutally clean (to my ears, that is). i like the 50w better - easier to push. guess it depends on what sound you're after.

Just looking at the schematic you can see they lack the extra gain stage that most of the older Fenders have and so  I imagine they're not going to overdrive on their own much even cranked.

I have a SF Bassman 100 which I use with very clean tubes (5881s amd Phillips 7581s). I am mainly playin bass, so clean with a bit of tubiness is OK. I'm going to put 12ax7s back in to spice things up a bit more. I like it quite a lot, and don't mind using pedals for distortion, gives my the option of having super clean or super dirty and anywhere in between.

900 Euro's...that's way too much for such an amp. Man for 900 you can get a BF bassman, Bandmaster or a tremolux.
I know prices are getting higer, but I recall guys telling me not to buy a 70teis 100 Bassman for like 500 Euro a coûple of years ago....because I could do better....

A rehersal space had the HUGE 4x12 cabinet that matched with the Bassman 100 (minus 3 speakers). They had trouble giving it away. I may yet aquire it, a may convert it inti a 2x12. The cabis just massive and rivals an 8x10 box and is heavy even with 1 speaker in it

Ok. it has the original cab. The thing is, it's HUGE....seams nice at first, sounds good, but when you start gigging it is pain...I've been lugging Showman cabs arround for a while and they are no fun. Really look arround, I'm sure you can find better stuff. The 100 isn't the best guitar amp as well imp. Ok for bass, but less nice for guitar.
If it were like 750, then you're talking imho.

Also the cab is nice for rehearsals, but most of todays gigs are Pa-ed, so no real need for that big a cab. I'm just talking of my own expirience here. I mean if you like it, you should get it.
But I setled with a smaller DIY cab these days. Fits the car nicely and does not break my back.

Well, the 50 watt model does not have mid controls of you want a mid control. The 50 watt model is good for guitar, but not really loud enough for bass unless you use it for folk or recording. The 100 watt model is probably too loud for guitar.

900 Euros might not be too much theoretically for a blackface Bassman with cabinet if the amp has European voltage, but if you have to use a transformer it's not worth it, and in reality those cabinets are not worth it either, they're too big and heavy.
