Re: For all you Nels Cline freaks
I just noticed that last night.
Too bad I don't have that kind of money lying around. I know it sounds amazing because I've heard it live (and I'm sure none of that had anything to do with the fact that Nels was playing through it), but I wish there was more info on it. Perhaps it's a bad habit of mine, but I tend to put amps into categories. With gear it's hard not to since everything is a clone or take of something else; there isn't a ton of innovation. I like the whole aesthetic, too, the lacquered cab is beautiful. Oh well, I guess I'll just add it to my list of dream amps I plan to buy when I'm old and rich right along side a vintage JTM45 and Hiwatt.

Based on the tube compliment I would guess it's at least inspired by 50's tweeds and likely fairly similar to a Bassman from that era. It's quite nice looking too. I like the way they've done the logo.

I was wondering what the mystical mysterious red box was! And now i can own it for half a mill. He had the best tone but im sure most of the tone emantes from his fingers.
And magenta feelings take up shelter in the base of my spine

$3000 for the amp. How much for his fingers?

Cline's rig is always changing...I wouldn't be surprised if he played a Wilco gig in a few months with a different amp altogether.

Re: For all you Nels Cline freaks
...that seems pricey considering the cabinet costs an additional $500. A special deal for the 1st ten amps is $2500($2000 for amp + $500 for cab) for a modified tweed bassman head - and then it jumps to $3,300??? Anyone else think that's absurd.

I think that in general, most boutique amps have gone to silly levels price-wise :-\
people just keep buying them though

I have seen hundreds of bands in my day and I very very rarely have seen a boutique amp on stage(or practice for that matter)...zhivago wrote: I think that in general, most boutique amps have gone to silly levels price-wise :-\

I wonder who owns all these boutique amps - probably Gideons because I have never met one of those either(Thanks, Bill Hicks!).

Re: For all you Nels Cline freaks
I know very few pople with boutique amps.
most I wasn't impressed with, as I've played the originals (which were usually similarly priced)
the one amp I liked is a friend's 4x10 Buddha combo...you can switch from 6L6 to EL84 operation and the amp just kills

Re: For all you Nels Cline freaks
they mostly go to the same geezers that buy the vintage strats and gibsons and tool (pun intended) around on their tricked out harleys.
i've had a couple of friends that have been pretty successful in the music biz that have rewarded themselves with nice gear. while most of them wouldn't part with the vintage guitars, most of the boutique amps came and went...sometimes 5-6 models...before they all eventually went back to their old amps or they picked out a vintage version of the fender/marshall/vox that they were already playing.

Re: For all you Nels Cline freaks
Well, quite frankly you can pay thousands upon thousands for a vintage 60's Marshall (or a tweed Bassman... or an AC30... ) or you can buy a new boutique knockoff (made just as well as an original and maybe even better in some cases) for a fraction of the cost... maybe 1.5k or so. Not only will it be new and potentially built better and with better quality components, it won't come with all the associated headaches that owning a 30-50 year old amp would be expected to come with. Of course you can get a circuit board repro for even less... and they'll probably sound just about as good as a hand wired (with cheaper parts... especially transformers and caps) but the reliability and serviceability isn't going to be the same. And there aren't too many classic vintage amps that can be had for much less then 1k anymore... won't be long before it's none.
