a trustworthy amp tech...

Post by fuzzking » Tue Apr 08, 2008 4:04 am

... is worth his weight in gold.

picked up my 50w plexi from a repair guy who knows everything about old stuff... it seems he had
to completely re-wire it, replace lots of stuff and that the thing was lethal because it seems like
someone has messed with it in a nonprofessional way. i assume it was the guys who last "serviced"
it some years ago.

there were the thinnest of cables in it with insulation partially gone (!?!) and material buildup from
current flow (sparks!) at the power switch, which could have lead to some extremely hazardous
situation in the not to far future. my flatmate played the thing for 3 months straight last year. i don't
want to think of how i'd have felt if something had happened.

phew.

i really wish i knew of a good amp tech, but it seems the only one around here (which is the one guy all the guitar shops refer to when you need amp work) isn't as skilled as he claims to be. he made a real mess of my sound city amp. don't really feel like going back to him with it, but there's no one else around that i know of :(

the one that has repaired and then modded my HR Deluxe seems great, he started working on tube amps when they still were everyone's choice...when I go to him my GAS for buying an old amp to bring it to him grows at exponential levels! :)
Architecture students are like virgins with an itch they cannot scratch,  never build a building 'till are fifty, what kind of life is that?

it really seems like good amp techs are a rare breed. i've been looking for one for years (at the premise of not having to send a vintage amp all across the country).  :-\
