Hiwatt tone?
I have serious Amp-GAS lately for a Weber Mywatt 100. They're some kind of exact-but-technically-advanced copy of vintage Hiwatt amps.
And i don't know why, i've never consciously listened to Hiwatt amps, but i feel very attracted by them.
I use the clean channel of my Peavey Classic 30 most of the time and i don't need something with 4 channels and extra stuff, i just want a simple 1 channel amp with a warm clean channel with lots of headroom - one thing that my Peavey, although it's a great amp for the low price, doesn't have enough of.
I know that no one here can tell me, how the Mywatts sound, but i imagine that it'll sound something like this.
Is this typical Hiwatt sound?
There was a review of them in a german guitar magazine and it just said "they sound like a vintage Mywatt has to sound". I've never heard a vintage Mywatt :-\
Later on, i'll mail the builder of Weber Amps and ask him some questions, but i want to have your opinion on Hiwatt tone too. Especially their clean sound.
Thank you!

I'm attracted too!
But i'd go with a 50W, 100W thru a 4X12 will be useless, unless you play in arenas!
I love the sound of El84s biased on clean side..
If you are able to crank it up you'll sound like pete towshend..
For the reference tone, think about a blackface with less snap and more compression, but still clean..

Architecture students are like virgins with an itch they cannot scratch, never build a building 'till are fifty, what kind of life is that?

Re: Hiwatt tone?
I know, 100 watt is a lot. That's maybe the only thing thats really bugging me. Max Weber formerly built 50 watt Mywatts (for around 850€!
), but no more, as it seems.
If he'd do it at request?

Another HW-ish option is Reeves: http://www.reevesamps.com/ Hand made, and a bit pricey, except for the Templar, which is not hand made. No personal experience, but they are getting good reviews.

Re: Hiwatt tone?
you can get pretty nice clean sounds with hiwatts, and they do have a lot of headroom. so assuming that the mywatts are faithful to the originals i'd say it'd be a good amp for your needs.kle wrote: i just want a simple 1 channel amp with a warm clean channel with lots of headroom - one thing that my Peavey, although it's a great amp for the low price, doesn't have enough of.
one of my top 2 amps ever was an early 70s DR103, and i used it in a lot of different situations. i think the master volume works really well, and it sounded really good even if i turned it down quite a lot. but if you're used to a peavey classic 30, i think 50w should be more than enough.

Re: Hiwatt tone?
I don't think 100 watts is too much.....it'll just be way more clean headroom.
50 watt and 100 tube amps are barely different in top volume....it's just that the 50 watt will overdrive way sooner. So you just need to decide how clean you really want it to be.....do you want to get into power tube distortion and some tube compression or do you just want to blow the doors off and keep all your clarity and bite?
1 channel amps rule.

Re: Hiwatt tone?
I have a 50W and my friend has a 100W. Both are early 70's Hiwatts.
On the 50W, I can crank both channels (We both tend to jump channels.) to the top and keep the master down and get kind of a Jesus Lizard tone. Overdriven, but super controlled. No feedback at all.
On the 100W, my friend tends to keep the channels between 12 and 1 o'clock. The master is just a hair above "off". This amp is insanely loud. Way more than you need, in my opinion. But I do like his clean tone a little more. I wouldn't trade my 50 for a 100 though.
The 50W is plenty loud, and dialing back the channel volumes and cranking the master, there is still adequate headroom. At least for me.
I think these heads sound much better with ported cabinets, by the way. I got a 2X12 closed back, and I am planning on switching to a ported, since my buddy's ported cabs sound so much bassier and better. (Although they are also 4X12s...)
I'm planning on getting an unloaded Swanson Hylight Style at some point.

Re: Hiwatt tone?
Thanks guys!
I'll have to let some money go for a guitar you'll all like (i think) in the next few months so it will take a while until i get my Mywatt. The 900€ for the amp are not the problem, but i want to get a decent 2x12 cab for it too - i mean, i have to. I was thinking of Orange, and those are expensive...

Re: Hiwatt tone?
Reeves makes 2X12 cabinets with speakers made for Hiwatts. They are expensive, but Fanes sound really good with Hiwatts.
