For a dorm room I would definitely be looking at one of the Yamaha THR amps. Good headphone outs, battery powered. You'll need amplification to play "Wonderwall" for the ladies.

I picked up a secondhand THR10C recently for a quiet practice solution and thoroughly recommend it or one of the new versions—though they’re maybe a little pricey. I can’t say I use the whole gamut of models, but the clean tone sounds great and there are a couple of dirtier sounds I really like too. The Class A model genuinely sounds and feels like a Vox, I think. The effects are all very good as well.

I was sceptical about using the software, but it’s pretty simple and I find it easier to get the sounds I like using the program. The app for the new models is even more user-friendly, I think.

I have limited space at the moment, so the THR is perfect for me.

I presume he's got a smartphone?

I don't think there's anything with a better price/performance than a small interface like one of those iRigs with the Amplitube app. The amp emulation is a cut above any budget options, it's portable...that's what I'd do.

Vox Amplug 2 is fantastic. Plug in a set of headphones and you're good to go!
