SUPRO meets SUPRO

SUPRO meets SUPRO

My Supro Westbury LH guitar has now a mate under the form of a Supro 1605R "Reverb 1964 Series" amplifier  :

It's a like new September 2020 2nd hand model, that I could snag for a reasonable deal in my local music shop... 8)

Originally, I was suspicious, given that the few Supro amps I tested some years ago appeared deceptive to me : Jupiter 1688RT and Saturn 1648RT. They both sounded dark and bassy, with a metallic, atonal reverb :squint: . And moreover, they were (and still are) costy... So not for me, too bad... :(

Frankie, my long time pal - and owner of the shop - called me : "this time, you should be interested". So I came with my Supro Westbury for testing that little 1605R. ???

And he was right : balanced tone, decent reverb, "dirty-smooth-vintage" sound, quite loud nonetheless, cute look and size... OK, it's not a SF/BF Fendery tone, and don't expect Hi-Gain despite the presence of a Master Volume, though : I said "dirty-smooth-vintage"... Right ? :)

I tried to trap the amp dialing-in some poor tones, but no uglyness came, no matter the setting, conversely to the Saturn and Jupiter where I had to search for dialing-in a good tone ! A good surprise, so...

Then I traded out my mint Marshall Class5 - an excellent amp, for sure :fp: - for the Supro 1605R, more suitable to me for Soul, Rhythm'n'Blues, Rock'n'Roll... :w00t:

Below the newcomer in my 5-watters herd... ;D

yep, that's great. I have a hankering to try one of the new big Supro amps having bought a Blues King 12 in lockdown #1 and been blown away with how good it is.

Thank you Guys ! :)

I never tested the Blues King - maybe it sounds better than the 1688 / 1648 ?

Another offset guitar that sounds great with the Supro 1605R : my modded (cheap / underrated) Harley-Benton JA-60LH OW "Tempest", with her Roswell "Jazzmaster-like" pickups (reputedly the same as found on the Squier JM)...

Awesome! My CPJM with Revel JM neck/SD Ant II bridge sounds darn near perfect with my Saturn MKII.
And I will be the one to hold Larry Csonka down, kiss him so hard, I'll take Larry Csonka's breath away...

Ah. I have some problems to decipher these abreviations...

Inside view of the 1605R :

I experimented a supplementary RC filter on B+ to make it dead silent :

Since it is not perfect - and I want perfection - I am studying a little choke placement now :

That's really cool, especially your modded Supro guitar.

I have two Supro guitars (a Hampton and a baritone Hampton), and a Comet. I love the Comet, but I agree the reverb is the weak point. If it had reverb like my Fenders or Swarts, it would absolutely be my favorite amp.

Thanks @Tritone ! :)

Details of the pickguard mod - I didn't liked the position of the volume pot way too close to the treble pickup... >:(

Yes, the reverb is not premium on many Supro amps, but on the 1605R, I'd say that it is acceptable - and much better than what I heard on the Supro Saturn 1648RT and Jupiter 1688RT that I tested. I agree : this is not a Fender SF one...
