Fender Power Chorus... Help!

Post by forevergone » Thu May 08, 2008 11:31 am

Hey guys,

A coworker of mine is selling me this amp for $50. It's in working order apparently but there are technical problems with it..

He tells me that there is a rather loud buzzing noise when the amp turns on. Can anyone diagnose this problem as to what it might be and how much it would cost to fix this problem? If it costs more to fix it than it would be to originally buy it, wouldn't really be worth it. But looks like I might have a good deal here.

What do you guys think?

Is the buzzing there all the time?  Or most of the time?  Or just when it is turned on?

I'd avoid sketchy solid state amps at all costs.  The beauty of the old tube amps is that they are easy (if not always cheap) to service.  Solid state ones are a different matter entirely.

If you like the sound of it and the buzzing doesn't bother you, you could always use it as a speaker cab if it dies.

My guess (and it's a very rough one) is that it will be more than $50 to fix it.  Maybe much more.

Only when it turns on (but it's constant) and its not _that_ loud. I tried it out during the evening and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

The buzz usually is hidden when using an effects pedal through some distortion, delay, or modular effect. I said I'd give him my decision by tomorrow so he's holding it for me right now.

Do you think its worth it for the price?
