New! Fender 68 Pro Reverb

Post by Larsongs » Sun Apr 18, 2021 2:26 pm

These look pretty cool! I want to try one out in a real setting less the Mics & Studio Mixed sound like so many of thesebYouTubes have these days...

I think this is going to be really popular. A light 1x12 with everything you need out of fender amp, and nothing you don’t. Not sure I agree with the speaker choice, but that's and easy enough fix.

35lbs is going on too much for me (that's how much my 40W 4-channel head, and the 2x12, and the footswitch weigh), but to be honest it's still tempting -- I like the mid control, I like the single channel, I love that Neo Creamback, and the price ain't half bad.

Looks like they saw no need for the vibrolux (or was the it the vibroverb) that they had briefly (2x10's correct?) I wonder how close these are to the original 62 vibroverb reissues they made back in the 90's which turned into the vibrolux custom in the late 90's (which people would add a negative feedback loop to so that it sounded more like the vibroverb).

I'd love to be a fly on the wall at the fender marketing meetings for such decisions.
It could always be worse

Seems to fit what a lot of people are looking for these days. Headroom, small package, classic Fender sound. Most people don’t bother with the Normal channel, so that’s a logical thing to eliminate. Vintage Amps does a Deluxe Reverb in this vein which seems cool other than their ugly logo and other questionable aesthetic choices.

Nice to see Fender get rid of the archaic RCA footswitch connections on these amps. I always thought that was ridiculous.

I got a chance to play one at GC the other day, using a nearby Epi Les Paul. Think of it as a Princeton Reverb with a tad more headroom and bass.

It’s a good amp, but heavier than I expected, especially given the Neo speaker. I could gig with it tonight just fine. With a regular speaker, I would put wheels on it. It certainly felt heavier that the 35 lbs listed on the spec.

It’s somewhat darker than I thought it would be, but that may be the 68 circuit. I’m sure the Les Paul had something to do with it. Probably would be different with my Jazzmaster or Barden equipped Telecaster. More headroom than a Deluxe reverb, of course, since it has 2x6L6 and 40w power section. I didn’t want to mess with opening up the pedal, so I didn’t try out the tremolo circuit. Size is a little bit larger than a Princeton.

final takeaway - I liked it, but it wasn’t magic. Failed the old man’s weight test (as do most Fender Reverb amps anymore). Had it been lighter (cross between a 65 DRRI and a Tonemaster DR), it would be a strong contender. If someone else would move them, I could play with a pair of these in stereo.
Jill Martini & The Shrunken Heads - all aloha, all the time

My 65 PRRI is listed at 28 lbs but seems heavier to me…

I’m not sure I like having just one channel though… Maybe it’s not a big deal? It’s not a problem with my Princeton & I seldom is Channel 1 on my DRRI…

I’d like to try one.. They didn’t have any last at GC to try out…. They didn’t have much of anything! Still… Supply Chain issues…

Might be a great time for someone wanting to get a job building Guitars & Amps!

Hey I just found out about this amp this very day - when I tried it in a my favorite guitar store in Vienna (has been a while since I've last been there)
Sounds and looks great! :?
Sadly I couldn't try the Tremolo because the footswitch wasn't anywhere to be found...
I could totally live with a single channel amp with these features - give me that as a Head and I'd be very happy with it! But I could also think about replacing my Vaporizer with one of those one day.

Originally I came to shoot out the EQD Ghost Echo vs. Levitation Reverb - but liked the Amp's reverb more than both combined... :D
