Got myself a new amp (Orange OR15H)

Post by i love sharin foo » Sat Apr 24, 2021 5:57 pm

I've been intrigued by the little Orange OR15H since they first came out and finally bought a used one. It just arrived yesterday, but I have about 6 hours on it so far. I've used only my two SGs thus far.. one with Duncan P90s and the other AlNiCo Bareknuckle Warpigs... on tuned to A standard, the other B standard. I am mighty impressed with the amp! For one, it is a loud 15 watts. The 7 watt switch brings it down a little, not a lot, but it doesn't feel as lively to me. It's a little flatter sounding. Like I had read before purchasing, the amp is EQed fairly bright. I have the treble rolled down to about 10 O'clock, the mids about 2 O'clock and the lows cranked. That setting gives me a nice, thick lowend with very present mids and just enough treble to have some detail. It has a large amount of gain onhand with no pedals. Enough where you could honestly play fairly heavy stuff without a dirtbox. The gain isn't a real woolly, fizzy, driven preamp tone either. It's more a toothy, coarse sound. A bit in between typical preamp grit and power tube bark. Pretty interesting. I'm running the gain about high noon which is fairly dirty but leaves room for the personality of different fuzzboxes. I have only run it through one of my 4x12s so far. A mid '70s Orange with Greenbacks. I'll try my newer cab with well broken in Vintage 30s another day. I plan on picking up one of the vertical, open back Orange 2x12s when I can afford it.

Looks hot! My Rockerverb and Overdrive are two of my favorite amps. I like that my Rockerverb has a built in attinuator. How does the little OR compare to the big one?

Thanks!!

I can get fairly close to how I have my OD120 setup (not full on dirty, but nowhere near clean) but the OR15 seems to be a little brighter and slightly more fizzy. The OR15s gain is a bit more saturated, a little more modern I suppose. Having the mids and lows up and treble down helps overcome most of it. It's not bad, just a little different from the OD120. I love the OD120 and will never sell it, but as I am sure you know, you really have to hit a certain point volume wise before they come to life and sound good. I'm at the point where I just can't tolerate that volume as often anymore :'( For running EL84s, I am very surprised at how it sounds. It really has a bit of an EL34 feel to it.

I should probably qualify this with the kind of tones and playing that are most like what I do.. Think Melvins, Monolord, Electric Wizard, Sleep, MOR era Sabbath, Sunn, etc... (I'm not reinvading the wheel with my playing... just having fun is all :) )

Cool. Sounds like the gain could be more like the Rockerverb gain.

I’ve almost bought this amp like a 100 times, but I always seem to talk myself out of it for some reason. It’s a really fun amp to play. Definitely has more ballz than its size would suggest.

You are exactly right on that! It sounds way bigger than you would think.

This wouldn't surprise me. The Jim Root Terror, which essentially is the Rockerverb dirty channel, has the same circuit board as the OR15. Components do differ between them though.

I have always loved the look of Orange amps.

The graphics and front panel layout are really well designed. I also like the old school color blocks used by Mu-Tron and late ‘70s Electro-Harmonix, like the Polychorus, to differentiate the layout and controls.

I never needed the tones they’re known for though, but I have toyed with the idea of picking up the OR-15 a few times, based on looks alone and to have a different option from my usual Vox and Fender tweeds.

I've had two OR15's. The first was awful but my current one absolutely rules. It is perfect for playing at home. I have several other oranges and this one really scratches the itch.

I love Orange. I have the Jim Root Terror, and the OR15 is very similar. The JR is just a little tighter (Modern?) and goes a little further into high gain territory.

The more I play this amp, the more I like it. I have quite a bit of time in on it already. Probably about ten hours over the last 4 days. I am now using it through my other Orange 4x12 with Vintage 30s and I think they might suit it a little better than the Greenbacks. I've had to adjust all my pedals to work better with it. Some of the settings are drastically different than the Overdrive 120. I can't even put into words how great it is to be able to have a really good sound at less than deafening sound pressures. I :-* the old Overdrive 120, but this little OR15 is exactly what I needed right now.

You should try one of the tiny orange amps. They are seriously good and lower volume. :)

Can't really go wrong with vintage 30s!

Its a drastically different amp inside, so I wouldnt be surprised at all if they sound different. If they sounded identical i'd be shocked, but to my knowledge the only modern Oranges with anything close to the old preamp are the custom shop types. Not that the modern ones cant sound incredible though!
