what is my 4x12 now with even more unknown fane speaker'd cabs
ok, so last year i got a great 4x12. i love the thing..... but i dunno what the fuck it is or who made it. i've not got that many photo's of it on my hard drive BUT here's some i do have.
so here's what i know about it.
it's got fane PA speakers in it (could have been changed)
it's got a sealed back with 2 horizontal input jacks (one is missing)
black grille with white piping
4 holes in the center of the grille from a possible square/rectangular logo
speakers mounted in the same way as old HH amps mounted their speakers BUT not an HH amp.
square-ish handles
very heavy.
here's what i don't think it is based on pictures.
laney supergroup cab
HH 4x12 cab
musicman 4x12 (but it does have a few similar elements)
simm watts/hiwatt/sound city
carlsbro 4x12
garnet (handles are wrong)
marshall
any ideas?

Possibly 80 or 90s era Ampeg cab. The white trim around the edge looks like some I've seen. I have a 70s era cab that went to my old V4 and it is about this size and also extremely heavy like you described the one in the photo. This is a bass cab but their guitar cabs also looked like this in that era:

Re: what is my 4x12?
i looked at a lot of sound city cabs and non seem to match up
i thought roost at some point but the frame of the roost cabs is a little thicker. the handles kinda match though.
i don't think i've ever seen a sovtek 4x12, not saying they don't exist. also the frame of the sovtek cabs i have seen seem to be thicker.
possibly. were the guitar cabs as deep as the bass cabs? also one thing that's throwing me off the ampeg thing is my cab doesn't have any cups on the top for the head to sit.tune_link wrote: ↑Mon Jun 21, 2021 5:08 amPossibly 80 or 90s era Ampeg cab. Oh yeah the cups may be the thing that indicates it isn't Ampeg. My 70s cab has the cups and most of the Ampeg ones seem to have them at least on a side of the cab somewhere so that you can turn it one way to use them or flip it slightly if you don't want to.

Re: what is my 4x12?
i'm pretty sure they're out there (from the original MIG period in the 90s i think?)i don't think i've ever seen a sovtek 4x12, not saying they don't exist. also the frame of the sovtek cabs i have seen seem to be thicker.
could be that dallas-arbiter (or whoever) would commission cabs from whomever could knock them up, badge them however many different ways (sound city, simms-watts, etc.), so that there is v little consistency.
have you checked speaker codes and such? i know celestions are fairly easy to pin down coz they kept such consistent track of things.

yeah. i know they're old fane heavy duty (i think that's what they called their PA speakers)MechaBulletBill wrote: ↑Mon Jun 21, 2021 7:37 ami'm pretty sure they're out there (from the original MIG period in the 90s i think?)i don't think i've ever seen a sovtek 4x12, not saying they don't exist. also the frame of the sovtek cabs i have seen seem to be thicker.

i think it could be one of the dallas arbiter brands but there's a few things throwing me off. mainly the tolex job.

Re: what is my 4x12?
OKAY. so reverb showed me this listing AND..... while not everything's exact (frame of the cab still looks to big and the handles are wrong) the rest looks similar.

EDIT:
i also found a univox 4x12 that looks really similar but i can't see any that have pictures of the handles or the back.

Re: what is my 4x12?
I had a cab that looked JUST like that about 12 years ago. I got it along with a (very obscure UK-made) Circle Sound head.
This is the only picture I can find of it, and you can only see a slither...
