Favorite amp for Jazzmaster

Post by BarnyardCoral » Wed Apr 13, 2022 7:34 am

I've had the chance to run my Jazzmaster through a handful of different amps and, while none ever really sound bad per se, some definitely rise to the top. So far, no matter what I've played, whenever I plug into my Supro Saturn MKII, that one always gives me the fizz like no other. I've listened to other demos of JMs running into Supros online and they've all got a similar, lovely sound. I can't say that about every guitar going into the Supro, but Supros and JMs are a really magical combination. Coming in 2nd would be a Vox AC15 though. Absolutely swooned over that sound the first time I plugged into one. Roll down the tone a bit to shake the ice off and it's wonderful.

What about you guys?

I think JM's are one of the best guitars to keep in the Fender "ecosystem." The cinematic scoop and woody plunk work well with the thud of Fender amps of all eras.

In my limited experience, pairing them with Oranges, Vox, or Marshall requires a bit of caution on the high end. Things can get rather icepicky pretty fast. Although, plenty of people are known for exactly that combination.

Picking just one, I must get this rather cliche choice out of the way quickly so others can offer more interesting and nuanced opinions: A blackface Deluxe on the edge. But then, there aren't many guitars for which that choice isn't best. The only reason I don't own one myself (besides the cost and the current tube apocalypse) is that the "sweet spot" doesn't lend itself to scaling too well. It's too loud for at home and in the kinds of shitholes I tend to play in, they often move too little or too much air.

Personally, the amp I played my jazz master with most was my Fender Bassbreaker 007. A 7 watt, single EL84, 1x10" combo with a bassman tone stack. I wish it had more head room at times, but it scaled the "big" sound of the JM's neck pickup all the way down to bedroom volumes.

I currently run a Quilter because of the practicality. Although, if the backline has a DRRI, I know I'm set. (Although, I should note that I don't gig my JM too much anymore. I've moved on to similar, but darker, midier pick ups).
If it wasn't for disappointment, I wouldn't have any appointments.

Swart AST. The little extra midrange is the perfect complement to the scoop a JM has. Also a little less shrill in the top end than a typical Fender.

If I was in the market for a small amp, I'd go straight for a Swart. Those things look fantastic. Trad JM pickups are low output so a little amp like a Space Tone might have a bit more headroom to work with.

I had this experience with Vox and Marshall but not Oranges. Oranges are darker then most amp. I curently use a AD30 with a Jazzmaster with great result.

Still, the best amp I have played with a Jazzmaster is a Princeton Reverb. At home, I use a Vibro-Champ.

I've heard some glorious tones from a Marshall circuit and a Jazzmaster too (can't figure out how to embed a YT video here but it's not a Rick Roll, I promise):

Any older Ampeg from the early-mid 60s. A Reverberocket 2 with a speaker upgrade will make you grin.

Voxes n' Hiwatts for me.

I've got a Pathfinder 15 that's just beautiful and 3 dimensional and Jazzmasters sound great through it. I've also got an Acetone Rockey amp that's more or less a clone of an AC-15, and true to its parent, it just chimes beautifully. It's got the swampiest, darkest reverb tank ever in it, so it's a bit of a strange bird, but all of it is quite complimentary to the way Jazzmasters sound.

Hiwatts, well, to my ear they're everything I like about Fender amps, but kind of in an idealized way with tamed transients and more body, and that's just again really complimentary to how JM pickups are voiced. Any kind of Hiwatt derived circuit is worth a JM player's time to check out, IMO.
This is an excellent rectangle

Ah yeah, that's one of those bedroom amps that everyone talks about. #1 requested backline by smooth jazz guitarists too.

I love my JM with my jtm45 but I play it most with my '66 Bassman. Probably because my Bassman and JM sit in my living room. I don't like it as much with small amps, I usually find that JMs and strats like to have at least 20 watts and multiple speakers to sound their best. I also usually prefer teles with smaller amps and single speakers.

This answer is similar to most guitars you could ask me about, but for my money:

Tweed Bassman.
