Two questions...

I've just gotten my girlfriend an electric guitar. I was wondering whether I should; get an additional amplifier (I already have one for myself), or, sell the one I currently have (that only has one input), and buy an amplifier with two inputs? Thing is, I've got a really low budget of about $150USD, plus whatever I make from the amplifier I currently have, should I decide to sell it (I don't think it'll fetch too much, given that it is a dinky, low-end valvestate Marshall).

What amplifiers would you guys recommend? I'm not looking for any particularly spectacular model, knowing the limits of what $150USD+ can get, but perhaps people have some recommendations for nice practice amplifiers around that price range? As long as there's a decent clean sound, I'm good to go!

Well, I'm not a very knowledgeable amp guy. but given your price range... I would probably look for a small used solid-state Fender like the Champion 110 or Champion 30, etc. IMO these are great little amps for small money; very clean, light, portable and reliable. If you really want a new amp for that money, I'd look at the small Peaveys.

Two amps are much better than both of you plugging into one amp.

I agree with what Fullerplast said - it's not the 60's anymore!

I would recommend one of the little Orange Crush 10's if you can get your hands on one of those - I played one once - it was really cheap, light and sounded good.

Hahaha, ok thanks! I'll keep an eye out for the models you've both mentioned. I'd really like to try Orange amplifiers as well, but I don't think that they are available in Singapore.

Actually, I've noticed a Fender Pro Junior sitting in one of the guitar shops here for at least a year. Its selling at around $490USD. During the Mid-year and Christmas sales, the prices for all their stuff goes down to half price. You think $245USD is worth it for a Pro Junior? I realise its a little more than the budget I alloted, heh, but if its a good deal...I could wait for that I suppose, although queuing to get into the store during the sale day is a nightmare (Hahaha, I remember waking up at 4am to queue with my friend so that he could get his Strat and P-Bass at a really cheap price).

I have a little Vox Cambridge 15 that is in that price range. It got renamed to 'Pathfinder 15/15R' but I think they are about the same. Tough to beat for $120US (for example). I've had mine about for 6 years or so and haven't had any trouble at all with it. I haven't put a ton of hours on it either though. Like anything in this price range, your mileage may well vary.

you can probably pick up another marshall valvestate? or maybe something in the fender solid state line for cleans?

Why not keep your amp and get her a small practice amp a honeytone for 30 bucks?
Is she starting out?

Yes to both.

She's just starting out, I'm gonna try teaching her to play. Not yet though, we're both pretty bogged down by our final year stuff in uni.

After reading what people have said, I think I'll be keeping the Marshall Valvestate. I'm also considering the fact that I've got the settings on it and all my pedals exactly the way I like things to sound! Haha!
