Power Tube Adaptors

Post by Abadacus » Mon Apr 16, 2007 3:41 pm

Lately I've been frustrated with my '76 Bassman; not for it's tone, which I love,  but for it's volume, which is enough that I can't turn it up very much in smaller venues. I really can't afford a new amp right now, and I don't want the many headaches that a power attenuator brings to the table; suddenly, I find out about these:

They let you switch out your 6L6's for smaller EL84's, lowering the wattage of your amp, and giving it a more Voxy tone. They seem like exactly what I need to get a more manageable volume for practice and small gigs. Not a huge change, but enough for me to really warm up my power tubes. Any thoughts?

I've used them and think they are great for giving your amp a different sound, but they are still loud as hell.  Most reviews have said the same thing, and my experience was no different.  If it allowed me to lower the volume at all, it was so small I couldn't tell.  But it's neat to mess around with EL84s.

i've got them too... and i've got the same opinion
my hot rod deluxe is still as loud (instead of playing at 2, i play it at 2.5), and the sound seems to have lost its warmth :-[

will probably buy an attenuator as soon as possible
That's some bad hat, Harry

I haven't tried them but one point I wanetd to bring up is clearence. If you do go for them, measure and make sure that you have enough room in your headbox to fit them. I was considering a set for an Orange at one point but after measuring, they wouldn't fit.
