for the money I'd never even look at mesa..

get a used soldano or VHT, if you can afford a Decatone by Soldano you'll be in gain heaven.

The Soldano's are really very nice amps.  I've always been amazed at how many players use those fizzly, buzzy, and rather horrid sounding Mesa Rectifiers over a Soldano.  I guess it just boils down to Mesa's ultra aggressive endorsement scheme.
