Congratulations!

That is one amazing amp, and a great price. I also vote for blond knobs!

I was actually looking into getting some blonde knobs to put on it but they only come in a pack of six with the extra presence knob theres 7 knobs in total :squint: Ill still probably do it even if it means buying two packs cause these boss knobs arent really my thing....It sounds amazing though especially when i ran it stereo with my AC30 and Deluxe memory man, sooo spacious! :w00t:

buy them from Small bear. They're sold loose, one at a time.

85 cents each! Probably cheaper than Fender's 6-pack anyhow!

Dude - that is definitely a great score. And don't touch that tolex - that amp has survived unmolested for 46 years, with only knobs and tubes changed. It would be a shame to mess with it now.

That said, if it still has the 1964 filter capacitors in it, it may be worth doing some maintenance. If you take some gut shots and under the dog house pics, knowledgeable folks here can let you know if they see anything worrisome - bulging cap ends, etc. You wouldn't drive a mint 1964 Corvette on the original tires. Same with filter caps.

Again, amazing deal, on one of the all time great amps.

Agreed with every single thing jetset said, right down to the letter.

Except I might add that bulging ends or not, it's time for original filter caps to go--for safety's sake. Perhaps the amp has had routine service anyway, but in case it hasn't-- those components have a lifespan of about 15 years. After that you're on "borrowed time." A failure could damage other valuable components, or at least compromise performance.

If it's not behaving weirdly (lots of hum, anemic power, etc) then enjoy it for a little while... but if you determine it has aging filter caps, plan on having them changed preventively. Actually it's not too hard to do yourself if you know proper safety procedure.

Resurrecting an old thread I know, but I stumbled upon it in my potential amp purchase research. I have an opportunity to purchase a transitional Bassman, listed as from 1963, it has the presence knob and you can see the numbers on the faceplate, it is black face cosmetics, but the knobs have been changed from the white ones that it would have originally came with to the black face witches hat style knobs, the grille has also been changed and the transformer and power cord changed to Aussie specs, which is a big plus has having to drag a step down transformer everywhere is a pain. I'm asking if there has been any other mods, but it appears those listed above are it, of that is all then they are merely cosmetic and I could potentially restore it back to how it would have looked.

I'm hoping to get it for around $1200, head only, bear in mind this is Australia and these types of amps are, and always have been, more expensive. In reality getting any high quality tube amp for $1200 is a great deal here. I couldn't find any that had recently sold to get an impression.

Anybody got any thoughts on the deal?
