He used a 4x12, but I would think a 2x12 would work fine as well. Of your two choices I would favor the 2x15, personally, but I don't think you need that much low-end for Smithery.

Personally I think solid-state with plenty of clean headroom is the way to go for sixers.

That works even better. lol 4x12's i've got. I thought i had read he was using 2x15's. a mark 3 into a 4x12, would I have to worry about bass frequiences tearing the speakers? Thanks for the input

He might be using 2x15's now, for all I know - he's changed his setup a couple times since he abandoned the original rig. The speakers in his 4x12 were Peavey Black Widows, which I've read are basically copies of JBL E120's. If you don't turn up too much or play too low you're probably fine, but if you blow something up I take no responsibility!

I'm having good results by using an Ampeg Micro-VR solid state head with its 2x10" cab (planning to get a second cab to make it even bigger! :D)

The Bass VI is nice also through my silverface Twin Reverb.

I sometimes run it in stereo through both the aforesaid amps: best of both worlds and MASSIVE sound! :?

Admittedly I haven't tried many of the options people have mentioned here, but I love the way my VI sounds through my JC-50. It's still good through my conventionally nicer sounding tube amp (a Blues Jr.), but something about the hi-fi frequency response of the JC-50 suits it better. Add chorus and an obscene amount of reverb and it's spacey heaven.

so, i was all set on getting a keyboard amp...but then i thought, "can i get an 8ohm bass cab and run it from the extension outs on my JC-120?".
so, i know that i can, i just want to make sure the JC can handle the bass frequencies. Anyone have experience?
What is acoustic? Oh, you means a grandpa's guitars? A grandpa's guitars? That's for pussies and grandpas. I think you know it.

You can plug a bass VI into anything, it makes no odds.. if you want it to sound like a bass get a bass amp(not a JC-120), if you want it to sound like a guitar get a guitar amp..and so on..just choose the amp for whatever sound you want or like..

i wanted a keyboard amp because of the flat response. was really looking to get a lab series k5. wide frequency range.
but the jc-120 doesn't colour my tone too much which is why i thought i'd just use that.

That will be fine just don't expect lots of bass response from a JC-120.

I intend to run my Bass VI through a Behringer k3000fx 4-channel Keyboard amp after running it through a Vox Tonelab ST modelling preamp. I am really happy with the Bassman model (US Blues with standard cab on the unit). I've used the Behringer before playing keys and mic'ing my guitar amp in my old band, and I was happy with the flat frequency range and low noise (and lets not lie, the price). I think it will work out nicely for my Squier VI. I can also run my J-Bass through the same unit using my Aguilar Tone hammer as a preamp.

through my ac30 have a little too much treble still, compared to a jazzmaster, needs more mids on the EQ but works well as anything into an ac30. Would not be a single bass but as a 'second bass' it sounds like a bass not just baritone in the mix still.
I've slammed the low G through maxed out fuzz, maxed volume on amp without any problems, many times for long periods. Throaty mids, or that electric piano sound. Not sure i'd go for it as first choice though, but amp choice is probably no different to the usual ones for jag as a baritone or a bass amp as a bass.

tuned a-a I use a princeton clone with 2x10s and 1x15. high pass on the vi.
if I want bass, I use a rack parametric eq into a crest power amp into a GK 4x10 bass cab.

sometimes both for fun. effects on the guitar side.

+1 on the Princeton.

They make great amps for tracking bass too. Not sure what it is, but at low volumes, they sound killer for low stuff.

If that's a vintage Fender 4x10, I'd recommend the Ampeg or 15s if you want to be heard, not blow speakers, and disengage the strangle switch. Mine came stock with 4 25W 32 ohm AlNiCo speakers. That's not great a great speaker IMO for modern, clear/deep bass which sits well with a drummer. I've managed to blow a few.
