Looking at some Peavey Classic 50s, 4x10 or 2x12?

I've played this amp several times, and have enjoyed it quite a bit. Am looking to go for one, but wasn't sure which would sound better, a 2x12 or a 4x10. I already have enough problems being lost in mixes (used to use a Hot Rod Deluxe, which I plan to keep for recording, and possibly a stereo rig for cleans, who knows), so I need a punchy present sound. I plan to use the lead channels on it, possibly with a BluesDriver in the line too.
Opinions?

The Peavy is okay if you can get one used, I prefer a Fender Deville personaly for about the same price.

I prefer the peavey to the fender hot rods, actually.
I've got the 50 watt head and I play it through a 60s fender bassman cab and it sounds great!

Well I've definetly done the Fender Hot Rod thing already, and although I would agree that the Clean tone on it is a bit better, the larger versatility with the gain channels of the Peavey has drawn me to it.
I guess this is more of a speaker related question, i.e. 4x10 vs 2x12, just because I'm curious to hear people's experiences with either.
but hey, I'll take any experiences with the Classic, it's all good.
Thanks so far everyone!

10's are punchier, dont fart out on the lows, plus more speakers = more spread and fullness to the sound. i also think the 4x1s look better.
i used a classic 50 4x10 for 5 years and loved it

I've always loved 10" speakers and would choose them over a 2x12....the low end of the 12s is nice, but sometimes it all feels rather muddy to my ears...
there is more focus and "snap" with a 4x10...the combo fits my style of playing more...
so yeah, my vote is for 4x10

+1 for 10s for paunchiness
but, if you plan to change speakers on that amp (many do) you have to consider - 2 or 4 speakers

I owned a Peavey Classic half stack (50W head and 4x10 cabinet). What a killer sounding amp! It had tons of classic warm tube tone on the clean channel and the lead channel wasn't too bad either, even without pedals. I used it for over ten years and it never failed me.
Sadly it was lost in a studio fire...

Man do I miss that amp!

I had one of the old old peaveys from the 70's the preamp was solid state and would get really fuzzy. I wanted a footswitch for the tremolo and reverb I contacted Peavey and the said it was one of the first amps they made. They said they hadn't made a switch for those amps in many a year but were still willing to make me one. You don't see that kind of service to often in this day and age.

ditto on this. i love 10's. have you looked at the marshall heads? not to deter you from your choice but i have never heard/played a peavey amp that i thought was worth buying. if the gain choices are your goal, marshall has that, however, i would prefer to get nice distortion/overdrive pedals through a Fender, Vox. Matchless etc. combo. just my two pinnies.

Another vote for the 4x10 for punchiness. I remember comparing it to the 2x12 in the shop and choosing the 4x10 for that reason. The Classic 50 is a great amp, one of the few things I regret selling.

+1 I don't really like the reverb on the Peaveys... Also, they don't seem to sparkle like the Fenders do.
