Reeves Custom 6 or Costum 12

Post by frippy » Sun Oct 14, 2007 8:09 am

As it's been a while since anyone posted in Sookwinder's GAS inducing Reeves thread, I thought it best to heed this site's advice and start a new thread  ;)

Reeves Custom 6 or Custom 12...

Which would be better suited to home-playing and recording? I like that the Custom 6 breaks up so well but I am looking for more of that '70s Hiwatt sound, which was more clean and on the edge of breakup. Should I go with the Custom 12 or will I never have it break up before going deaf and/or having the neighbors and/or the missus tell me to turn it off...

I am looking at the 1x12" combo version of both, so the 100 USD difference in price isn't a consideration.

FWIW my main guitar with this will be an Les Paul Vintage Mahogany...

Edit: Please pardon the less than optimal grammar in this post. 'tis Sunday morning and I've only had one cup of coffee today  ::)

Well, I wouldn't think the 12 would be too loud but I'm sure it'll get up there.  I'm only guessing though as I've only heard the sound clips.

The one thing I think I should mention is that the Custom 6 & 12 probably aren't going to sound anything like an old Hiwatt at lower volume levels.  Both have a single ended power section so when it starts to brake up a little it's going to be a sorta mushier sounding then the ultra tight and crisp tone that's the "Hiwatt sound."  You can hear what I'm talking about quite a bit if you listen to any of the bridge humbucker with overdrive samples for the 6 & 12.  I personally am a huge fan of the single ended amp sound, especially on the edge of breakup, but it's not that Hiwatt crisp tight chimey thing really.  I's a warmer rounder tone.  Just though I should mention it.
