If you want my opinion, I'd just leave it as-is. I've owned a few Silverface and Blackface amps over the years (I still own several), and have played through more than I can count. And the differences between the eras is not a matter of "Blackface is better", but really a matter of whichever amp you own sounding a certain way. If you think this amp sounds amazing, keep it as is. You could always get it changed and wind up hating it. I've played a lot of really bad sounding Blackface amps, and a lot of great sounding Silverface amps. In fact, I'd say I tend to prefer the Silverface amps that I've played, but that's just my experience. There are certain arguably "better" ideas in the Blackface era, but the sonic differences are hard to see as a matter of better or worse. IMO, of course.

I hear you. I've always loved all my Silverface amps. I thought they all sounded good and I've owned probably around 10 of them. We'll see. I don't see myself converting it anytime soon.

I pulled the V1 position tube today and the sound is much better to my ears. Breaks up earlier too. When I sold it I had it pulled but included the tube to be put back in if the buyer decided to. Forgot about that until today and it was indeed in there so I took it out. I only use the vibrato/reverb channel anyway. I also replaced half of the preamps with vintage USA tubes I had lying around - hope they are still in good shape because I don't have access to a tube tester (amp sounds fine to me so far). I was thinking of eventually replacing the preamps with some newer high quality tubes.

Beautiful. I love my Showman amp. I would leave it alone. I love my Blackface Showman and I love my Silverface Ultralinear Twin Reverb. I like the way they each sound. If you like it, I would leave it alone. I wouldn't get hung up on one being better than another or anything. An amp is used to make sound. If you like the sound, then it is all good. :)

Not all '69 fender twins and showmans had the ckt I described. it was only used for a few months. what I'm talking about is WILDLY different than the standard fender layout. They also have smaller power transformers than usual and they dont have a bias adjustment. They look like they do but its just a hum balance. If your amp sounds good, then it's probably fine. The amps i'm talking about sound terrible.

My DSR definitely has regular transformers and weighs a ton - when I used to gig it I felt like the handle was going to snap.

I have one of those Dual Showman cabs without the piping - 2 x matching Orange Label D130F inside). Heavy haulers but exquisite sound for surf. I need to find a matching vintage head. (The one in the pic is a kiwi-made '64 Jansen Bassman50 that is running EL34s at the mo).

Wow that DSR is a lot of amp--I remember when they came out, but forgot how substantial they are--haven't seen one in a long while! Enjoy!
