GOOD, vintage solid state amps for reasonable money?

Post by idiotbear » Thu Jan 03, 2008 12:28 pm

Hey guys,

I'm very vaguely thinking of picking up an old solid state amp for cheap. I want super clean, tons of headroom, big open sound. Any suggestions?

I have an old Award-session 2x12 sessionette and it does just that - loud and clean, with a really huge reverb. I don't think they're all that expensive second-hand.

Edit: here's one in Cumbria with a BIN of £95....

Not for Hijack but I'm going to make my old korean combo in head + cab format.. as soon as I have enough money for tracking down a cheap 12" speaker from ebay..it will be a lot of fun and a nice amp for practice at home, and I gain an additional 1X12" cab to add to my HRDX when I'm in larger venues....
Obviously I'l made all the work bymyself!! :-*

It's 75W as well, but a 2x12. I've never seen another 2x12 though! My one has the exact same panel as that one on ebay, but with a bigger cabinet.

Polytone?  those are all the rage with Jazz players.  I live in Boston where we have Berklee College of Music with lots of Jazz players.  After they leave school there's lots of Polytone amps used in shops.

I'll add:

Randall orange face - inexpensive and well made - I have a cool RG60 that is superb
Univox  - I play through a MinimaxU4100 which is a super bass/gtr combo with a 15" spkr.
Yamaha - the 80s era amps are very inexpensive and worthwhile - often with a harsh, but kind of interesting, distortion channel..

The Kinks - The Fall – The Bad Seeds - Spacemen 3 - The Gories - Royal Trux

A while back I picked up an old Acoustic head. It sounds really great. I think I paid $150 for it at the time.

I'm in the UK. They seem to be a tad on the pricey side, like everything else, over here. I think obscure is the way to go...
