Everyone needs a stompbox.

Fair enough, but you’ve already gone all-out in the form of a custom pedal for the preamp piece.

You might be able to house a pre-populated Class D board from Aliexpress or whatever like you mentioned earlier.

I’d just be wary of going too cheap on this.
To be honest, Tony is not particularly expensive for custom work. The pedal was less than $200!
Nice!

It's worth noting that this is going to be a rarely-used scenario... maybe a few times a year. So spending $£$£ isn't really what I was hoping to do. A few hundred on the used market is where I'm at here. The Quilters look great, but are very very spendy.

I've spent the past few days looking at Quilter heads... I REALLY don't need another amp, especially with a Strange Luxe Plus on the way, but the thought of a pair of quilter heads, light weight cabinets and/or direct is really tempting, especially going from a Walrus ACS-1 and and ART preamp, which is basically my direct recording setup. If I was gigging, I'd pull the trigger.

The Bassman is very different to all the other Blackface amps
This may be the very essence of internet Chinese Whispers, but I distinctly remember my Mesa-loving mate telling me the circuit for his preferred one (mk. 4, I think?) is based on a Bassman. Could be a bum steer, but I'm pretty sure Joyo do a cheap Mesa-in-a-box which wouldn't break the bank to try. Could be called 'California Sound'....
The Mesa Mark amps started out based on the 4x10 tweed Bassman amps but with added gain stages. Every MK evolved a bit from there.

To be fair, most amps started out based on the 4x10 tweed Bassman. More amps have a direct lineage to that amp than ones that dont.

Yeah, the 4x10 Bassman is to the tube amp world what the tubescreamer is to boutique overdrives.

I think its probably the introduction of the LTPI to the guitar market? Hugely influential.

Well, it arrived today and Tony really knocked it out the park! I jury-rigged together a way to test it as best I could from what I have in the house....

Guitar > pedalboard > BALLSMOM > Cube 40 Poweramp in > ext cab out > Marshall 1x12

I'd say it has slightly less overdrive than the real thing but that's no doubt down to the fact it's just preamp drive and no power tube saturation. EQ is nailing it too. I think, certainly in a live situation, I don't think anyone in an audience would even notice. It sounds really, really good.

Hahah, it was fucking chaos! Cables everywhere, hot and sweaty, noisy, cats going nuts. I tried to record on my phone as that's all I have but I don't think it's a fair representation :D

Haha, that sounds like chaos. I would've probably been ok with all of that except the hot and sweaty (unless it was from excited playing, and not just a high ambient temperature).

Awesome to hear that it's working out so well for you and the setup looks like a ton of fun! Also, another vote for some clips if you ever have a moment to spare. Enjoy the new arrangement and I hope it's less sweaty now haha

I haven't got time to do anything extra on top of the random noodlings I captured on my phone on the first day, so that'll have to do for now....

YouTube Video

It's still processing the HD/4k quality so give it a moment unless you like really bad quality content :D
