Re: JHS shuts down ROSS
I might be wrong but I think most states have a 'Stand your ground' policy which is kinda sketchy and does allow for a lot of shooting situations. I could be wrong, and happily corrected. The law system is fucking bonkers over there though - especially with state vs federal law often contradicting each other (see: state level cannabis legalisation).
Unsurprisingly, it's almost all Red states that have this. Surprise surprise.

Well, this may be true in Florida and some other southern states, but at least in New Jersey, the situation where you can legally shoot an intruder is pretty comical. Like they have to on your property, actively threatening you, you can't have any reasonable means of escape, and I think you need to verbally warn them or something like that. Which, on one hand, good. Having that high bar makes it pretty impossible to manufacture a farcical scenario just to shoot your neighbor.JSett wrote: ↑Sun Jan 05, 2025 9:46 amI might be wrong but I think most states have a 'Stand your ground' policy which is kinda sketchy and does allow for a lot of shooting situations. That said, I've always met people in parking lots. Pro tip: most public libraries have meeting spaces you can reserve for free and for any purpose that wasn't having sex, day drinking, or conducting business (meaning selling timeshares or meeting with clients). I used to see a lot of internet sales done that way when I worked at a library (which I know is a kind of business, but we also didn't give a fart).
If it wasn't for disappointment, I wouldn't have any appointments.

Not that hard to imagine, I've read of dumber shit happening quite frequently.seenoevil II wrote: ↑Sun Jan 05, 2025 10:02 amWell, this may be true in Florida and some other southern states, but at least in New Jersey, the situation where you can legally shoot an intruder is pretty comical. INSERT 1x AVERAGE MENTAL AMERICAN WITH NO CONSCIENCE (of which there are, undeniably, tons of), A GUN, AND A NASTY PLAN :
"This guy came around to check out my sweet guitar and when he came in he attempted to steal it and attacked me so I warned him then, but he wouldn't stop, so I shot him in self defence! I was just standing my ground"
(pockets $10'000)
There are people dumb enough to take $10k to someones house, and there are shitty enough people out there to shoot someone over $10k (or less). In 2024 America, anything is possible.

Honestly, I would be more concerned with the police taking the money than the buyer. I'm a lot of places, just that concentration of cash is considered suspicious enough to take as evidence in a investigation with many people never recovering it.JSett wrote: ↑Sun Jan 05, 2025 11:10 amNot that hard to imagine, I've read of dumber shit happening quite frequently.seenoevil II wrote: ↑Sun Jan 05, 2025 10:02 amWell, this may be true in Florida and some other southern states, but at least in New Jersey, the situation where you can legally shoot an intruder is pretty comical. But honestly honestly, we're getting into a cartoonish caricature of the place. Most times, most places, nothing happens.

Yes, I likely am. My apologies. Viewing the US from across the Atlantic we definitely get a very filtered look into what it's like there, and we see mostly the mental stuff and forget there's like a gazillion towns and +300m.seenoevil II wrote: ↑Sun Jan 05, 2025 12:23 pmBut honestly honestly, we're getting into a cartoonish caricature of the place. I was mostly, but not entirely joking. We do hear lots of stories over here about people quite literally getting away with murder after shooting victims for things like - running along the street in front of their house, using their driveway to turn around while lost, attempting to deliver mail to them...
But obviously, those events are rare and we only hear about the exceptions. Hence why it was mostly tongue in cheek. And had an emoticon, to make sure you knew...

$10k? Jesus, I've heard of people shot for far less than that. I delivered mail for a few years and yeah, there's no shortage of stories of carriers getting shot, particularly in rural areas and in the darker, winter months. I've also heard (but not confirmed) of an inter-family dispute where one brother shot another over a turkey leg. You don't need a master plan to shot someone, you just need really poor decision making skills and a firearm!

There was an incident where a girl was doing a K-turn in some old guy's driveway and he shot her dead.

Since Shopify requires that I have an address to put on my website and I need a return address to put on shipping labels for orders either through Reverb or my website, I got a UPS mailbox because I REALLY don't want to deal with some psycho coming to my house because he's not happy with the Mustang bridge I sold him.
Because that wouldn't be far-fetched these days.

Re: JHS shuts down ROSS
The existence of "stand your ground" laws in the states is kinda beside the point, imo. The fact is that people will just start shooting, whether they have a legal right or not.
Of course that's not exactly standard, and your likelihood of that depends on where you are in the country, but its still pretty shitty.
