I've owned 1 real rat, 2 brats, a few clones, and plenty of modelers with digital rats. The way I play, they are ok for low to medium gain, terrible as a high gainer, and best as a boost into another pedal or a dirty amp. On my brat, I have put the clipping diodes on switches, I like the soft clipping best. It sounds similar to a TS this way, more mids, and smoother.

Here's a great reference to the different versions available.

Who buys a Rat to make it sound like a Tubescreamer? That's like taking a Dodge Charger and replacing the engine with a Tesla :D
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

I know, I'm on Santa's naughty list.

Also the new Charger is electric.

So I recently bought a USA Made 2003 Turbo Rat that has an OP07, and the sweep range of each pot maxes out at 9 o'clock. Is this normal for a Turbo Rat? I've owned a Chinese Rat 2 and a JAM Rattler before and didn't have this issue. Anything past 9 o'clock and nothing happens. I basically have to use filter at zero as shown below.

yeah, that's weird. power supply issue? how is it when you run on just a fresh battery?

this time of year, we have a different kind of Rat situation around our house :fp:
but you guys have inspired me to hunt down my early '90s Rat. i can hear it now. i think the main reason i've favored others is the lack of a LED indicator. yeah, i'm a volume pedal guy who needs to know whether things are on or off while i'm at rest between parts.

i may have lent that Rat to someone a while back. the good news is that prices are remarkably reasonable, i think they are going for not much more than what i paid in the late '90s for a used big box reissue.

I've never played an original Rat, though I kinda want to for comparison. I love the versatility of the circuit, and I've had a few. Arc Effects Soothsayer (kind of regret selling that one), Magnetic Effects Lonely Robot, and I feel like one other, but can't remember. I've got a Black Mass 1312 and I love it. I think this one will be my final Rat ;D

Yeah they are great! Every rat rolled in to one, and it sounds fantastic.

The demos and description was killer, but what tipped the scales and finally sold me was Black Mass donating to Trans rights and other group(s) :-*

Black Mass is legit! I've heard really good things about their JM pickups as well but have yet to try them.

+1 for Black Mass. I have one from the first batch (black paint job) and it's a great bunch of Rats packed into one pedal. I also have an '88 Rat 2, and a Turbo Rat.
