Anyone got any ideas on what the new “NOTA” JHS pedal could be?

Everyone needs a stompbox.

This reads like the scale tips towards Stevie but yet there is still love for John. :-*
I admire JM’s playing, he’s a great player. But I’m a young guy with a old soul so I’m mainly a SRV guy when it comes to blues.
Agreed on JM. And Continuum is a fantastic album, I don’t care what anyone says or how they feel about John otherwise.

Mayer is so divisive...

I was in this band for a while and we decided we could use a second guitarist. The drummer wanted to bring in a close friend. Really cool guy btw.

But... when asked about is pedal board he mentioned that he styled it after John Mayer. I knew instantly the bassist was having none of that. What was worse was his tone was very JM and a bunch of guitar-face JM solo licks ensued.

After the audition the bassist said no way and it caused the whole project to come to an abrupt end as a result. :D :D :D

Has anyone tried the NotAKlon? That one looks more interesting to me. That said, I know there is some controversy surrounding this company, which is disappointing because I enjoy their YouTube videos quite a bit. I'd really like to buy one of the Klon clones, but I don't want to support a shitty company if that is the case.

I have one and the budget $99 Tubescreamer. Both sound amazing but…. They’re very modern. They have way too much output. They’re so loud. If you only use a clean amp, unity gain is like 9 o’clock. That shit annoys me. Why do you need a pedal with that much output?

I don't know any of the details, but AFAIK the whole "shitty company" thing comes from Josh's involvement with a shitty mega church that he cut all ties to long ago (after finding out about their shitty practices), but the internet won't let him off the hook.

That’s what I understand too. It’s a shame, really. I’ve enjoyed a few of his pedals over the years and thought the quality was high (albeit more expensive in general).

I have a couple of drive pedals like this & yeah it’s super annoying. Seems like I’m throttling my own sonic possibilities, but mostly trying not to overload a bloody 50w tube amp with endless gain stages.
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

That’s what i hear too. The internet is really good at getting hung up on things, even when things change.
I like their pedals, and my color box is probably one of the nicest pedals I own, in terms of manufacturing quality.
Everything looks very thought out, paint job is perfect, no rough edges, etc etc. Just feels like a very solid piece of equipment.

Despite his many controversies I have grown very fond of his pedals especially the 3 series

No but why would it be different than any other Klon clone? Other than you get to see first hand how horrible the build quality is while you assemble it?

And re: JHS i've outlined my beefs before in another thread. There's the church thing which he's distanced himself from, at least publicly, but:
1) The shitty church thing which is mentioned and pretty well known.

2) The fucking EHX Lizard Queen is the BIG one to me. That circuit is a straight rip off of a DIY design that a small guy on a forum (freestompboxes) posted (the "bazz me, fuss you"). The design of that itself is a sandwich of two very well known and old DIY circuits (the "bazz fuss" and "push me, pull you"), which the forum guy freely acknowledges. Josh Scott, said unbelievable twat, claims its his "original design". Everybody in the pedal game borrows circuits, tweaks, etc. Tons of people make Big Muffs. But to call that your own design and not credit the ingenuity of the people who actually came up with it is MAD shitty.

3) Calling your company "JHS", despite it being your initials, is shitty and riding the coattails of a classic in the history of effects (JHS - John Hornby Skewes). If your name is Michael Jordan, fine, but if you put "23" on all your stuff you're an asshole.

4) To your comment "he always seems fine in the videos" we can agree to disagree. He's smug as hell to me.

The Klon circuit has a lot of output. Many overdrives do as well. The idea here is to be able to be kind of an amp boost that adds a bit of its own clipping. In fact that's kind of the idea with the Klon, blending clean boost and drive, to the point that most people run them so clean the "magic diodes" never engage. Anyway this is a very simple, 10 cent thing to mod on any pedal not built by an industrial robot.

I started this thread because I wanted to see what other people thought about this “mystery” pedal that I took interest in but instead it’s starting to become a “JHS bashing thread”. I am not trying to throw shade at @DrTonyBalls because I respect him and his work but I just wanted to see if anyone else had interest in it. I’m really starting to regret my decision of creating this thread. :fp:

EDIT: I get it, Josh Scott is a dickhead but I like his products and I’m sorry if that makes anyone upset. I do not agree with what he’s done but I am a player who found things he made that I like.

It was inevitable. Every time a JHS pedal thread starts it tends to quickly devolve into a bashing session. (In a way it reminds me of all the relic’ing threads years ago; you couldn’t get more than 3 posts in before someone had to state their opinions on relics as a genre, and we were off to the races.)

For the sake of the OP, can we please get back on track?
