Re: JHS shuts down ROSS
i don't even hate the guy or anything but i thought it was funny (not in a good way mind you) when he invited the ceo of danelectro who paid money out of pocket to stop gay marriage in california to his show to plug his 200 dollar foxx tone fuzz clone
it's like bro folks already think you're a fundie homophobe why would you go and do that? it also reminded me of an old youtube comment fight he had with a guy who told him to just say "if i had a gay kid i would support them" and jhs flat out refused to say it
anyways rip ross and nothing of value was lost

Love and hate were in the air like pollen from a flower.

Absolutely. It's just hard to trust the supposed reformation of a lifelong known liar and shyster/huckster. It's a common line with these guys to do this and then burn the crowd yet again. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me a 23rd time and I'm just a glutton for punishment.

JHS is a small business, and I appreciate the way Josh lays it all out in his latest video, starting at 27:40:

"Design credit" as intellectual property is not really a thing, and having spent time sorting through what kinds of "guitar stuff" can (and cannot be) "protected" with a buddy who is an IP attorney, I take some comfort in the fact that he finds Josh's schtick entertaining.

Oh, I get that, but in the time during which I've been paying attention to pedals (maybe the past 10 years) I haven't seen JHS involved in any controversies. Again, I could have missed something and I'm always willing to admit I'm wrong when presented with evidence, but what I've seen is somebody that has grown from the experiences and become better for it.hulakatt wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2024 1:38 pmAbsolutely. I hope I'm not poking a hornet's nest in this thread, but I really want to ask something, and it really kinda got hammered home since it was actually brought on on Facebook (which I very rarely even go on these days).hulakatt wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2024 1:38 pmAbsolutely. Why is it that every time there's a Josh/JHS mention anywhere it invariably turns into the discussion of his past transgressions but the same doesn't seem to happen any time Vertex/Mason or Fulltone/Mike Fuller is brought up? Mason is a straight up fraud but people will openly talk about Vertex stuff and Mike Fuller has become more openly an example of a terrible human being as the years go by (and he started off as a terrible person even before being openly racist) yet I rarely see anybody go in for the kill with either of them like they do in every JHS thread. Is it that people avoid it or are just tired of beating that dead horse (although, I argue that the JHS horse has been beaten to the point of disintegration at this point)?
Honestly, I try (but sometimes fail) to just avoid discussions about any of that altogether, but it's just disheartening that guys that have actually done harm get a pass while heaps of negativity are thrown at a guy who (at least appears to have) put in effort to correct and improve things.

There’s been quite a lot of discussions about JHS, Fulltone, and Danelectro on the forum over the years (not sure about Vertex).GilmourD wrote: ↑Wed Nov 27, 2024 5:41 amWhy is it that every time there's a Josh/JHS mention anywhere it invariably turns into the discussion of his past transgressions but the same doesn't seem to happen any time Vertex/Mason or Fulltone/Mike Fuller is brought up? I’ve purposely avoided JHS over the years, and sold off any Fulltone/Danelectro stuff I owned after I became aware of what I was unknowingly supporting. I know they already had their money, and the stuff I had was either obtained in a trade or bought second-hand, but I won’t be seen as an advocate for that bullshit.

Doesnt mean its not shitty, though. He straight stole a design from a little guy in the DIY world, not like EHX or someone, and claimed he created it from whole cloth. THAT is shitty no matter how you slice it. Its like a headlining comedian stealing jokes from someone they heard at an open mic. Its straight bullshit and is undefendable.

Understood and agreed. Apparently Robin Williams was a well-known joke thief. I only learned about that after his death.Dr Tony Balls wrote: ↑Wed Nov 27, 2024 7:20 amDoesnt mean its not shitty, though. For the record, the 32" scale conversion neck for vintage-style P&J bodies is an innovation that I was the first to bring to market. It seriously bummed me out when a Chinese copycat showed up on Reverb.com. Legally, there's nothing I can do, but it's still a shitty thing for a US-based retailer to offer in our market. I thought about sending them a note asking them to please sell what they have and don't reorder, but it appears as though they may have stopped on their own.
I'm hoping my partnership with Allparts to create MIJ conversion necks with licensed headstocks puts an end to the situation, but I'm prepared for the idea that, if successful, it may just encourage more copycats. To your point, Allparts could have just stolen the idea outright with no consequences, but they chose to include me in the project because they believe my goodwill adds value.

It's weird that so many champions of the entire 'queer' scene are absolutely fine playing new or vintage Danelectro stuff. Especially the 90s-today era.Telliot wrote: ↑Wed Nov 27, 2024 7:13 am.... sold off any Danelectro stuff I owned after I became aware of what I was unknowingly supporting. Worth pointing out that Leo Fender was a staunch conservative Christian and was quite likely, considering the era, extremely homophobic.

I’m never one to easily accept the ‘times have changed’ fallback excuse, but do think it’s one thing to be that in the 50s and another thing entirely to be that today.

Yeah I shied away from making that statement too as it's a poor way to excuse the elderly being arseholes, but there's lots of people that are pretty old that are not that way inclined. He was, however, extremely strong-faithed up until his death so it's not beyond the realms of possibility that we're all all being a little hypocritical (including myself) in denouncing particular companies. It's the same in other industries too. Hell, famed historic tattooer Sailor Jerry wouldn't knowingly ever let a gay man into his studio but I know plenty of queer tattooers that adore his work.
I can kinda forgive Leo purely based on his era, but there's no excuse for Josh Scott et al who should know better.
I might be wrong though about Leo, but it seems entirely plausible.

Re: JHS shuts down ROSS
honestly, as shitty as his past was. i don't care. like those actions are in the past and he's at least tried to make up for it over the years. my big issue with him is his videos and this is the issue with personality driven creators of stuff, there's a face to the name and if you don't like the face, it can put you off the name. he comes across something between the worst aspects of blooze lawyer culture and someone who's terminally online and just wants to make memes. nothing wrong in theory but because of that, i just have zero interest in his pedals at all.GilmourD wrote: ↑Wed Nov 27, 2024 5:41 am
