Probably gonna save my pennies for a bit and hit up this guy.

The Slow Loris board is still in production, so it looks doable.

Definitely in money saving mode at the moment, but if I find out I'll update here.soggy mittens wrote:interesting, would love to know how much it is, if you find out
I am also greatly amused by this:
It's a blendable Alpha Dog (Rat) and Pale Horse (TS) circuit which might be usable as a cleanish blend. I kinda want one just for the name and graphics to be honest, but it's out of production of course.

Re: RATs for grownups
Welp, stumbled onto a built Madbean Moar on ebay last night for a decent price, so I decided to give it a shot. Supposedly the circuit is a Rat/Timmy mashup. Will report back.
Also had a chance to spend some time with a TC Dark Matter yesterday. I didn't hate it, but it has a bit of a modeling amp quality to it if that makes sense. You could do a hell of a lot worse for $50, but not quite what I'm looking for.

have you tried the tc electronics mojomojo? I like the mojomojo but hate the dark matter.marqueemoon wrote: Also had a chance to spend some time with a TC Dark Matter yesterday. Have not tried the Mojo Mojo. I'll give it a try if I see one in a shop.
The DOD Gunslinger is another I'm curious about.

Re: RATs for grownups
I've ended up with an 80s non-sloped glow-in-the-dark rat2 and I hate hate HATE it with single coils (ie. most of my guitars) but it sounds incredible with my 80s yamaha Les Paul copy.
With the Mustang/80s Tokai strat, the tone filter goes from awful harsh upper-mid/treble with honky mids and not enough bass until about 2 o'clock where you get blanket-over-amp sound. It's really bad for the low-mid gain tones I want it for.
With the Yamaha, it kind of sounds good with the filter anywhere. Gain up to about 10-11 o'clock is all I need for a classic blues/rock sound. It's just not a sound I use out of the house and I think an EQD Gray channel would do that and then some. I think I'm anti- tone controls on pedals, they should just be voiced 'right'.

Re: RATs for grownups
My go-to settings for single coils are 9:00 on the gain and 3:00 on the filter (volume to taste). With more gain things start to get mushy with that amount of filter, but too hashy if you roll the filter back too much.
With a tube amp that's already breaking up a little this is a great sound. My main guitar has lipsticks, but these settings work well for Tele/Strat/JM too. The main thing I'll change with humbuckers is a little less filter.

Re: RATs for grownups
Got the Madbean Moar today and was able to put it through its paces at the practice space for a little bit. It's very cool. Definitely more transparent without being blooze lawyer smooth or too grainy or midrange-heavy. Works best for me with volume and tone at noon and adjusting gain to taste for a little lift over my clean sound. Around 11 o'clock is working well.
The two clipping modes are almost imperceptibly different. The soft mode is a slightly less harsh on the bridge pickup, though I will probably continue to use my Zeta for bridge pickup crunchy rhythm stuff as it's a little warmer and fuller sounding.
Overall I am quite stoked on this pedal and looking forward to hearing how it works in a band context.

Welp, the Moar is working great. Played my first show and did my first recording with it the other day.

Re: RATs for grownups
Recently bought a T Rex Yellow Drive and it's working really well for my RAT needs. It doesn't have as much gain on the second channel as some RATs I've played, but the option of having the cleaner side and the ability to switch quickly.
I've had a lot of different RATs and clones. I still have a Freakshow fx Brown Rabbit and a 1979 tone knob RAT and I can coax the similar sounds out of the Yellow Drive. Yellow Drive sounds better to me than the Brown Rabbit.

Re: RATs for grownups
I'm playing a one-off show on bass in a few weeks and decided to be lazy and just try my guitar board in practice since everything is already wired up. Gotta say the Moar is giving me a pretty usable fuzzy tone with the tone all the way down and gain all the way up without sucking low end. Quite stoked on it.

What about the Clean Rat on the Deucetone? You can use it to stack as well, since it's technically two Rats in one unit. Maybe stacking a Clean Rat with a Turbo Rat?

Re: RATs for grownups
Bumping this thread.
I'm getting the Rat jones again. I used my small box original on a demo recording for my new-ish band recently and it was *just* the sound for the song and my bandmates dug it. It's a little worse for wear and my 90's reissue is huge and neither have an LED. Not that it's hard to tell when a Rat is on the second you start playing, but yeah.
I want an obnoxious and cutting sound on my board again that works at both low and high gain settings. Anything new out in the category I should look at? The Blammo! Shrew and Pettyjohn ROUS both look pretty interesting.
I'm not opposed to less boo-tique options too. Low noise and silent switching are big plusses for me. Top jacks are nice, but not required,

Re: RATs for grownups
Reading through this thread again after so much time I can't help but cringe at my past opinions. yikes x)
Still love my Turbo Rat and find myself lowing the gain and preferring it that way now, with the gain up it just gets muddy and kills the repeats on pre-dirt delay. Also F the Timmy, can't believe I used to love that pedal so much. BB-Preamp into a Rat these days. B)
