I love this CSP-104. A previous owner added an on/off light and a power jack input on the back.

feed a blue box into it and run it into a vibrato pedal and you're getting close to rowland s howard.

77 and an 82.... can't say I can hear a difference between them, great pedals.

...what surprises me is, many a pages say it's not a distortion pedal, but more of an overdrive. Wth? This thing is almost fuzz!!!

Really nice to just use it with the guitars volume knob.
When I want to convince myself to give up and quit guitar, I contemplate or research the actual differences between overdrive and distortion (or fuzz.) :fp:

Can anyone expand more on why these typically get grouped up with overdrive pedals? I know a lot of people looking for either bluesy, 80s rock or metal sounds typically don’t like these but not sure how much I trust those opinions. Maybe I just need to try one - but is there consensus here whether it falls into the modern distortion or overdrive idiom?

It's very much distortion. More fizzy than fuzzy when dimed. Where it falls in to "overdrive" territory, is where many people will set the D+ up with the volume maxed with the distortion in the off position (or close thereto). It's the range from 0-10 and where people use it, that shapes their opinion of them. To my ear, there aren't a lot of other things that do the volume = 10 / distortion = 0 "overdrive" sound better. So when I think D+, I tend to think of it more as an overdrive. In the '90s... I definitely used it as a distortion box - always with the distortion at noon or better.

It does distortion best, overdrive okay, and "boost" rather poorly from my experience.

I really like this circuit(s), can anyone recommend some pedals inspired by these?

The rare Colorsound Distortion is a Distortion + with a Big Muff tone control. The less rare 90s Colorsound Tonebender in the big silver and orange box is the same. Not the thin case, that has transistors and is a Tone Bender MK - 3. The big box has a 741 and germanium diode. A nice overdrive with the gain rolled back and a smooth, fuzzy overdrive, but more distortion than fuzz with the gain up. Thanks to the tone stack, if you hit it with a boost in front of it, it sounds a lot like an Op Amp Big Muff.

I also just picked up yet another one - a 1978 model with the script bottom. Loving it!!!

Now I have a 78, 79 and 82 👍🏻

If you can find an Earthquaker Devices White Light Overdrive or a VFE Distortion 3, those pedals can give you similar sounds but with more EQ. I don't think either of them get you the exact tone of the MXR Distortion+, but it might appeal to your curiousity. I had a clone of the Dist+ from CBC Pedals but sold it and now he doesn't build anymore.

I think the Gray Channel has both a DOD250 and the Dist+ circuits. I've been tempted to try it for a long time!

I can. I build pedals and quite a few of them are inspired by / based on the D+

The RSH03 Rowland S. Howard model, obviously. Very vintage correct straight D+ paired with a very vintage correct Blue Box circuit.

The Wine & Roses Steve Wynn signature pedal. Twin D+ based circuits with LM308 opamps, an added tone control and increased output level. The two channels are slightly different. One cleaner featuring hybrid SI/Ge clipping, one pure Ge clipping. enhanced low-end response in both channels.

The Double Standard Distortion. As the above but with LM741CN opamps and standard frequency response in the Ge channel.

The Old Black Shoe. Harry Howard signature model (discontinued and almost sold out). pedal. Hybrid clipping. Less distortion, louder, cleaner, enhanced bass response. LM308 opamp. Used by Mick Harvey on tour with PJ Harvey.

Germanium Dirt. Four Ge clipping diodes makes for more output volume and slightly less distortion. Added tone control. Enhanced low-end response. LM308 opamp.

- The Wine and Roses is basically Germanium Dirt and Old Black Shoe circuits in one pedal.
