Boss Hyper Fuzz clone

Post by burpgun » Tue Oct 22, 2019 7:46 am

Hey all. I suspect that like a lot of you I'm on a never ending quest to get the right distortion pedal. I've become quite interested in the sound of the Boss Hyper Fuzz FZ-2. I'm not sure I want to pay near $300 for a distortion pedal and I don't see a Boss re-issue, so I'm curious: Does anyone make an affordable, quality clone? Thanks for any feedback.

the behringer SF300 super fuzz is an FZ2 clone, and sounds pretty good by all accounts. i've never had one, but it's definitely worth a look if you need all the features of the FZ2. If you just want that kind of octave fuzz, it's worth trying other Univox Superfuzz/Shin-Ei FY6 clones like the Reuss Goo Goo, smallsound/bigsound Buzzz, or zvex Octane

yes, the Behringer sounds really really good, and cost maybe 10 times less than a FZ-2. I have one and use it a lot, the only thing is the plastic enclosure is crappy, so I might rehouse it one day.

I second the Behringer. I had the FZ-2 way back in the day and when I tried to get another one it was crazy expensive. I got the Behringer and to my ears it's the same pedal.

As said above, the Behringer is pretty much spot on.

You can watch this video for reference:

I built a clone a while ago using a PCB from PedalPCB if you´re into DIY.

I’ll add one more voice to that Behringer Super Fuzz chorus. I think it may have even been discontinued now though. I bought mine brand new for $25 last year and now I’m seeing them pop up on Reverb for $60 and $70 if that tells you anything. It sounds virtually identical to the Boss FZ2. The only and I mean only downside to it is the enclosure is made of cheap orange plastic.

For what it’s worth if you want another fuzz of this ilk I have the Earthquaker Terminal (also discontinued now for crying out loud) and it sounds unruly as a swarm of bees with a much more solid enclosure. I think it’s a clone of one of the companion style Shin Ei pedals.

Red One Music in Canada has them in stock, I think the "temporary?" shortage has been caused by the JHS Pedals "Whats the Deal with Behringer?" episode

The Behringer price was so low I put in an order at Sweetwater. It’ll come when it comes. Curious, if I really like it but have issues with the plastic case how do you upgrade the housing? Is that even possible!

There are certainly some pedal rehousing/custom builder types that will do it. Like... this place. It's a pretty small operation, and it sort of depends on the pedal. I got a Klon KTR pedal rehoused just fine. A few years later I tried to get a NUX pedal rehoused and got turned down, but I imagine the Begringer is more straightforward.

I love that sort of thing. :jacked:

Sadly that site explicitly states that they won't rehouse Behringer pedals :(

I got so excited when I saw that link because I've been trying to find someone to rehouse my Behringer Super Fuzz. The other mods they do and rehousing still seems very helpful! So thanks for the recommendation anyway it is greatly appreciated!

D'oh! Sorry. Well, I'd do a search and see if some other similar places might.

even if someone agrees to rehouse it, it might be so annoying and time consuming for them that it'd be cheaper to buy a ground-up clone or other superfuzz type from a small builder (like dwarfcraft or something)

that said, i doubt anybody's behringer is going to fall apart anytime soon, unless it's off-board getting kicked around night after night.

Ya I would think the money spent on rehousing would be better spent on a clone. I just picked up the Behringer to play with at home, if I was going to gig with it I might want something more heavy duty.

Fuzzlord is another company that does a Superfuzz/HyperFuzz pedal.

I'm not saying you're wrong, because these are perfectly valid points.

My experience with a particular custom clone builder have not been all that spectacular, but I still have one pedal on my board from that person, and another builder built me a really solid pedal, but it was pretty expensive all things considered. So yeah, maybe dwarfcraft, or a 'bigger name' builder could do that from the ground up and it'd still be cheaper than Behringer + Rehouse-- but maybe not.

Don't forget that there is still a certain stigma that *some* (but not all) people feel with Behringer pedals, and a few others, like Danelectro and other inexpensive pedals. Rehousing a pedal that you like, no matter how cheap or expensive, doesn't have to be about savings, road wear, or brand shame, it can just be about the FUN and looks too. 8)
