I can chug on my Vox Vietnamese AC15 now. With a Rectifier type of pedal.

I got the AC15 with the WGS speaker in it. Loved it for sparkly cleans but it was reaaaly weak for distortion even after the Gc12 broke in. Tried TS808, OCD, Hot Cake, Gunslinger, Acapulco Gold, Hungry Robot LG HG, found lots of great tones and all of them are cool in their own right, but alas Chugging was still not even an option.

None of what I tried gave even a touch of metal response. Considered getting a new speaker but nah, didn’t want to lose the Nashvile bell tones.

A few months goes by and I see a $50 Nu-x Recto-Distortion at the local crack dealer and remembered how rectifier VSTs and emulators seemed to make everything chug so i got one to try out and I’m chugging on my Vietnamese AC15 now even with a full hollow-body Epiphone.

Not necessarily metal core but i feel like if it got stacked with the right companion it would totally be possible. Bear in mind my Vox has the solidstate rectifier in it too.

Now it has me wanting to try some more BOOTEEK versions of a circuit like this. I am getting smooth late 80s metal tones now. Like White Snake etc.

That's nice. Isn't the Rectifier a 90s thing? "Originally introduced in 1992." it says on wikipedia. It reminds of all those mostly crappy post-grunge bands, but I love that sound on Foo Fighter's "The Colour and the Shape". A sort of buzzsaw thickness.

I never really chug (when I play heavy, I'm more inclined to doom), but I believe the MESA own's Throttle Box is a good option. And back in the day "we" all just used Sansamp GT-2s.

I like my DOD Gunslinger Mosfet Distortion for this kind of thing. I was playing along to Saves the Day's "Through Being Cool" earlier this weekend and got some pretty agreeable chug out of it and my AC15.

I like the Wampler Triple Wreck for a Recto tone in a pedal. It handles more like the actual amp, so it likes a boost in front to really get tight, but I find it way more versatile than similar stuff.

Thanks for the recommendations I will check those out.

I love the gunslinger but it only half chugs with my particular amp, speaker and guitar combo. If i had a greenback it would probably be more chuggy.

I am doing more deathrock type stuff so i reallly like transparent and natural harmonic distortion and drive to play through chorus.

I ran my ocd thru the recto pedal and it definitely tightened it up even more and made it sound more angry. Same with a treble booster i made. Might put the germanium tranny back in it too and see what happens. I have a silicon one in it now to lower the noise floor.

Late 80s early 90s poodle rock for sure. I’m sure i could get post grunge with it too but i run it through a 3rd dimension chorus and shimmery verbs and ping pong and modulation delay that drags it back to the 80s maybe.

The full-size Recto heads like a low noise floor. The preamp is pretty input-sensitive, so the less crap you don't need that goes in, the better it sounds -- it's why pretty much every self-respecting modern metal player puts a Tube Screamer in front of their Recto: it cuts low end that the amp really doesn't need.
I spent maybe 20 minutes with one and the only axe I had to use was a Tele with single-coils, the noise taking up the already-low preamp headroom made it super mushy and undefined. Cut all the stuff you don't need (including noise, as much as possible) before you hit a real Recto -- and something like the Triple Wreck, which acts like one, for good and ill -- and you'll be much happier for it.

The Keely Filaments does that type of tone really well. With that creamy, compressed low end that Mesas are famous for.

Unfortunately, the speaker could very easily be the limiting factor here. Some speakers will just flub out when presented with so much low end. And if that’s the case with the speaker in your vox, maybe consider getting a cheap 1x12 cab with a more modern sounding speaker to help you scratch the itch.

Rectos weren’t just the post grunge butt rock stuff. Kim Thayl used a dual recto on Superunknown, which I think is a fantastic sounding record.

@harlowthefish

You’re right, im not gonna do it. I spent like three hours choosing that silicon tranny out of several others and it’s really good sounding rn.

@Corporate disguise

Thank you for the keely filament suggestion. Gonna look it up on youtube after this post. That’s the thing though I was gonna get a new speaker but the pedal made it so I don’t have to. I agree with Kim Thayle and Super Unknown. Incredible album and one of the albums that made me fascinated with guitar. Gonna listen to it tomorrow when i wake up!

Thanks for the input I really appreciate it. This is my first post but I have been scouring this forum for years and it has been an oracle for me.

MXR has a 5150 Overdrive Pedal out now which is probably kind of similar. I asked the retailer about it and he said less flabby, boosted mids like a recto overdriven with an OD808. Sounds interesting. 🤔

Ehhhh I'm calling bullshit on this. Rectos are big and grunty, 5150s are grindy chainsaws of upper mids and treble. The actual 5150 OD pedal I'm not a huge fan of, I find it really noisy, and while it sounds fine it feels a bit mushy. I'd skip anything that's pitched as a TS-type boost into whatever amp, because the really important part of the boost is that you're able to adjust it to where it works with your rig. You need the adjustability and interactivity of being able to boost or cut certain frequencies at whatever point in the chain, and most pedals or amps that are billed as a combo boost/distortion-preamp won't really give you that option.

Ive done something opposite. I can chime on my solid states with my Vox style pedal. I got an AMT bricks vx clean. Very impressed, but most the other 'bricks' are chugging type pedals. There are barely any reviews on this thing but the older non-valve amp sims were very positively reviewed.

Try the Revv G3 or G4 maybe.

Yeah you’re right. I heard some clips and not digging it at all.
