Want an Anolog Delay

Post by ARAMP1 » Fri Jun 04, 2021 4:39 pm

I don't have any analog delays and I wanted to remedy that. Any form factor/size and $300-ish budget. Was thinking about the Analogman ARDX20 or the DOD Rubberneck. Not opposed to extras with tap tempo, but was kind of wanting to keep it basic. What are other options?

Are you looking for an actual analog delay, or just something that is analog-voiced? My all-time favorite delay is a Caroline Kilobyte, which is a digital delay voiced to sound analog.

I was thinking a true oldschool analog, but might have to check it out. I have a first gen Wave Cannon that I love.

If you’re gonna chuck $300 just get a vintage boss DM2 or a Ibanez AD80

i dunno if it's analog but i have a old blood noise endevors black fountain on my board. i never thought i'd find a better dark delay than the behringer vintage time machine but hey. i did.

+1 for black fountain. Lovely thing but it’s dirty as you like.

I realllly liked the TC Flashback analogue delay. Not sure what that was modelled on.
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

Nah, its a digital emulation of oil can delay.

Id probably go for a Memory Man, due to the modulation potential. But for my budget i have a Teisco.

The DOD Rubberneck sounds very dark compared to a DMM. The Strymon Brigadier is digital but seems to sound close to a real DMM. Are you looking for really dark, "muddy" reapeats, or something clearer ?

I have:
Maxon AD900, AD999, vintage AD80
Boss DM-2, DM-3
vintage Ibanez AD9
Moogerfooger MF-104Z

With the exception of the Moog, all are well under $300 and all are great in their own different ways. If it were me, I would go with the AD900. It is a fairly clear tone for an analog circuit. But it still has a lot of character. The voicing is middle of the road and very versatile. I think it's about 600ms or so which is usually enough. It will self oscillate as well. It is just about impossible to make it sound bad.

The AD999 had less headroom and a much dirtier tone than the AD900. It is a really grungey kind of sound. It sits in the background perhaps better than any other that I own ( if you want it to that is) other than possibly the Moog. I bought the 900 and 999 the same day a few years ago intending to keep the "better" of the two... they excel at different things... so I kept both!

The DM2 is a classic sound. Thinner than the others but not as thin as the DM3 ( this is relative... none sound bad!). It has a relatively short delay time. No frills but it does what it does well. The DM3 gains a little time and has a little less character. Its a great middleground between dirty analog and digital.

The AD9 is thicker and a bit stiffer than the Boss pedals. Not quite as interesting sounding but still a solid tone.

AD80 is 18v and it shows... higher headroom and a much stiffer, clunkier tone. It is very present and more in your face. It is not creamy or any of that. In certain applications, nothing can do what it does.

I won't go into the Moogerfooger, but if you could find one of the Minifoogers for the right price, I think I'd choose it over all of the above. Short of that, the AD900 or AD999 would be top picks. I think I paid about $300 for BOTH of mine, total. Long post, but I have a lot of experience with crusty old (PINK) delays :)

I like my Electro Harmonix Memory Toy, but I haven't compared it to anything really. With that budget, I'd go for the JHS Panther Cub. It's the only standard size delay pedal with mix and output level control... So it would be good for boosting and fattening up lead or single note lines with one stomp. It also has 1000ms (if you ever need that much) of analog delay and tap tempo.
Without music, life would be a mistake.

I've got two analog delays:

DMM
DOD Rubberneck

Yes, the Rubberneck is darker, but it does all sorts of stuff the DMM can't. The DMM is the gold standard and is an instrument unto itself.

Either would probably bring you years of joy.

The DOD Rubberneck is a lot of delay for the money. They sound great, have quite a bit of delay time, and include tap tempo if that's something you think you'll want. I'm not a delay power user at all and am very happy with my Boss DM-2W. Sounds great to me and I find it easy to dial in. I've heard good things about the Analogman unit but haven't played one.

honestly, it could have fooled me. my only downside with it is it can't really self oscillate like others.
