suggested dist/od pedals for Bass VI?

Post by John Taverna » Thu Dec 21, 2006 8:24 am

I've got a Boss DS-1 but I don't like how it sounds playing bass-like (too muddy)...
any suggestions for a beefier dist pedal?

A Big Muff would work pretty well for that. Also, the Zvex Woolly mammoth would be perfect. Pricey, but perfect. Both can process the lower frequencies really well and retain all of them.

I'd suggest the Bluebard Bass Fuzz.  It sounds like the perfect triangle-knob Big Muff, only voiced for the bass.

The Woolly Mammoth is just too darned "fizzy" for my tastes.  I like my fuzzes to sound a bit more organic.

The BJF Blue Berry Bass Overdrive is a winner, too.  Everything Bjorn makes is amazing.

Woolly Mammoth fizzy and not organic?!?  ???

I'm getting a VI soon and VERY optimistic about it running through my Green Muff and maybe a nice eq for even lower frequencies at times.. the first thing I'm doing with it though is putting on my Cure records and plugging in some chorus, delay, and reverb  :)  :?

Yes.  I don't like that kind of fuzz.

If you're talking about running your Bass VI through a green Big Muff reissue, then you owe it to yourself to check out the Bluebeard.

Ironically, the best overdrive I've found for my VI is the Lead channel on my Marshall.  ???

...Bluebeard you say?  Where can one find this Bluebeard of which you speak?

That's the tricky part.  I think the Bluebeard is technically known as the "Sanford and Sonny Bluebeard Fuzz."

The guy who makes them is named Sonny Simpson.  He doesn't have a webpage or anything.  It's a pretty small operation.

My best guess is to contact him via MySpace.  I think he's on there.

Good luck!

I love the old tech 21 XXL pedals with bass. It sucks for guitar unless you have a humbucker, but for bass it sounds like butter. You can usually pick them up for pretty cheap at pawn shops or ebay. They have a new reissue that's made specifically for bass, and it's probably the same as the old one. If you can find one in a shop you should try it out. I had one of the old ones that I bought on ebay for 20 bucks, I let the bass player in my band try it, and he begged me to sell it to him.
Why should we buy postage stamps? We can make our own.

actually that's what I'm doing these days!  :?  :D

back to distortion: I'll consider the Muff (Electro Harmonix, Digitech, Pro Co and Boss are the few brands available round here)...
but keep going, please!...

i had a friend that settled on the Boss Heavy Metal ((?) it's the black and orange one...HM-2?) pedal as the best for a Bass VI after trying about a dozen dirt boxes. i think it has an extra tone control, which makes all the difference...so you might try something like the old Marshall black wedge shaped pedals like the Guv'nor or Shredmaster...or something similar with the extra tone control...maybe a Jekyll and Hyde wouild be an easy to find cheap choice?

the friend also used flange and chorus alot for Cure/Cocteau Twins tones.

If you ever come across one check out the Emma Reezafratzitz. Gainwise it's like a distortion but the character is inbetween OD and dist. Tried it with a modern Jaguar Bariton and it worked very well and retained the low end better than both the Big Muff reissue and the Rat I compared it with.

The Boss Bass Overdrive I don't really like, sounds too muddled for both bass and tenor IMO.

pedal wise I don't think I've liked anything geared towards bass.. even on bass

they always seem overdone

after few awful tests with gtr pedals (big muff, rat, turbo dist) today I tried these ones specific for bass:
MXR Bass Blow Torch - cool midrange sounds Muse-like but unsatisfying for more habitual applies, though case and hardware, too expensive :-\
Tech 21 XXL Bass Edition - better than any other guitar pedal but still too muddy :-\
Boss ODB-3 - more functional than the Blow Torch, sounds better than the XXL, quite cheap :-*
Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI - very expensive but maybe the best bass sound ever heard, AWESOME!!!  :?
bought the ODB-3 but... sooner/later the SansAmp will be mine!!!

You know that Behringer make a clone of the SansAmp modelling DIs? For a fraction of the price. I'd suggest trying one of them out.

I have the guitar version, and it's pretty good.
