Just finished my BYOC Big Muff build...

Post by Jay » Tue Feb 27, 2007 6:42 pm

Consider this a pre-review until I get a little more time to put it thought it's paces...

So the BYOC Large Beaver is a clone of the triangle knob Big Muff circuit and I can say right now that it compares favorably but doesn't sound exactly the same.  The original is maybe a wee bit smoother sounding with a less pronounced top end and slightly less compression.  Also, the tone knob seems to make a more noticeable difference across the sweep range.  The BYOC stomps the original in the noise department.  My original is a hiss factory from hell, the BYOC is quiet as a church mouse.

Here's a pic of my build...  even smaller then the Hammond BB size enclosure the Little Big Muff is in.  :)  I also added the mids shift mod which makes a pretty noticeable difference in the character of the sound and reaction of the tone knob.  More on that in the full review.  I made it look like a Schlitz beer can since Schlitz apparently is slang for vagina in German. Of course I LOVED Jonas's VAGINA idea but that was his idea and I needed something of my own so I stuck with the (very tired) innuendo angle.  At least this ones a bit more abstract.

It looks really great Jay! I was thinking about building one at some point. It'd be nice to save some space on my pedalboard. I love the sound of the green Sovtek ones, but sometimes it's hard to fit them on.  How does the sound of this one compare to a green one? I'd expect it to be less fat and "woolly", but that is just basedloosely on feedback I've heard from different people. I've never tried a triangle Muff myself.

I had a green one but Justin (Daydream) has it now. but I think I can safely say that the green is woollier.  I don't want to make too many judgments as to what this one will or won't do yet though.  I definitely need more time to mess with it.  I'll know more Saturday when I have the house to myself for awhile.

Cool, thanks. I definitely look forward to hearing what you think after you get some time in on it.

Your builds are always finished very nicely.

I'm gonna have to have a go at a couple of these soon. I was going to start with the Mighty Mouse but the FKR has raised the bar on Rat clones .. maybe a Tonebender clone.

Times change.  Remember when dog Jimmy used to go white and chalky?  Now it grows hair!  We got used to it. We'll get used to poly. -blueavenger

Haha...  yeah, the "yeast" control may be a little much but I couldn't resist.

The decal is white water slide printed from my inkjet.  I printed it out on a tan color to try and match the paint color so cutting around it would make it look more silkscreened.  You can see the edges a little but I think it worked well.  If I could have matched the color better with my printer I really would have been in business.  I think next time I'll take it to Staples and have it done on one of the color lasers though.  I've seen some really nice (much crisper then mine) decal transfers done that way.  I still can't paint without getting a load of shit in the finish though.  This one's even got a hair in the base to go along with the other bits of dust/sand.  :)

Wow!

I'm going to have to get myself some water slide decals for my upcoming BYOC projects.

I can't get over how professional that unit looks, Jay.

NO! It's supposed to be smooth, clean, and water should bead up on it when taken out of it's errr... koozie?

Alright.  Enough of the innuendo.  I could go on for days.
