Jaycemade Liquid Trem

Post by jaycemumford » Sat Jan 07, 2012 7:31 pm

hey guys, i had a bit of intrest when i posted a few pics on the 'workbench' thread.

Lately ive been working on a DeArmond TremTrol Clone. For those who dont know its a Trem unit that uses a fluid filled cannister (the hot guitar signal is passed throught the liquid) to get the smooth liquidy tremolo.
The can is rocked back and fourth buy a motor spining a tappered shaft wich spins a rubber wheel with an offset centre.
Pretty cool technology for 1949.

Pretty much the only website with deatails.

They're thin on the ground, not to mention the ridic prices on ebay. So here i am making my own.

It'll will be a slow process, but i working on it as much as i can.

So i built a little cannister just to see how it worked.
The orignials were brass with a glass sleeve. Which was always a hard part to replace, so i skipped glass and used acrylic.
My can is also brass, nice to solder and easy to work with.

you can kinda see the blue fluid in the second pic.

it did work so i was pretty happy, i made a little vid.

I then started to make a better quality can for the prototype.

Copper again, with a better mounting bracket. Its super strong now.

Also the second pic has the acrylic end plugs. Machined from a solid rod, then polished and flame polished to be crystal clear.
I got some knobs from my collection, found some cool Reece's Peanut Butter Cup style knobs. Stripped the crinkle paint off etch primed the skirts and painted them in a seafoamy/blue. Also the cool crinkle Alum stucco panel will the face plate.

Yeah apparantly. Pretty cool, but i would imagine most liquids with water would work.

Pure water is actually an insulator. It's the mineral properties that make it conduct electricity.

So tomoro i plan to make up the box, this is only a prototype so the box will be a bit bigger than needed just to be safe.

Im hoping in the future there may be intrest from other people to purchase one but it is a lot of hard work. We'll see,

I would need to chnage a few things, like the amount of copper im using for this build is a bit crazy. Wherever i can im using it, using up all the bits from the shed.
So that would have to change, its getting expensive.

Once this one is finished ill have a better idea of cost.

Shit's seriously inspiring though. What about sending signals through water in general? It seems like a lot of that "bubbly valve" effect could be achieved with liquid, but hell if I know anything behind the science.
