Re: What your favorite sad dad band says about you
Nice post!
I have no idea what most of these bands sound like, so I checked out War On Drugs, and I have to say, it's even funnier now.
What a godawful band they are. I'm guessing Everclear are even worse?

It's really hard to be worse than Everclear!
What a good read that was.
This is an excellent rectangle

My bandmate alerted me to this. We spent a good part of the afternoon coming up with our own on the band group chat.
Kayaks!

Agreed. I burst out laughing at the Bright Eyes one with the spreadsheet line. My wife is definitely a Bright Eyes fangirl and DEFINITELY makes a spreadsheet for everything

i'm definitely somewhere between wilco and bright eyes.
i was surprised not to see american football on there. then i remembered why. american football is like divorced dad music for people who still act like sad and mopey 15 year olds.
p.s. i like american football. just most the fans i've encountered have a strong case of small PP incel energy

I'm not sure how much this is just confirmation bias, but I loved that.
"Your son's friends like you and worry about you..."
Replace son's friends with colleagues/acquaintances 5-15 years younger than me.
"...that was Savage Rock... that was 1619 House... that was Vox Populi..."

If it wasn't for disappointment, I wouldn't have any appointments.

Yeah, that sounds about right.
LCD Soundsystem
You received a stand for your keyboard for Christmas. You can ski pretty well. Stephen Sondheim’s death hit you harder than you expected. You have mentally composed but never posted an OkCupid profile.

As a Gen X Brooklyn dad that likes guitar music, this was a little on the nose.

I guess the Pixies one fits me best in terms of favorite on that list and description of me, apart from the IPA thing because I never liked IPAs to begin with.

This list confuses me. The bands span different eras. It’s all very American. Feels like the time I first heard the term soccer mom (What’s wrong with your mum playing football??).
Autistic person in doesn’t get the joke shocker
Showing my age & cultural upbringing, I still think dad bands are Dire Straits/Knopfler, Genesis & associated solo acts. That’s who I remember my dad listening to the most during the 80s/90s. It’s funny when I think he was into pop-prog or something similar in his late 30s. He turned me on to REM, but they didn’t seem like a dad band even though they looked like old men to me.

I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

This piece plays on stereotypes of American Gen X (mostly white) aging hipster dudes. Many of us, myself included, fit the profile.sal paradise wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 12:00 amThis list confuses me. The specific bands are just a vehicle for a humorous critique of a group of folks that as it turns out are every bit as clueless,
materialistic, and arrogant as Boomers.
That’s my interpretation anyway.
