I made a thing (Anglo-Americana-Country vibes)

Post by JSett » Tue Mar 25, 2025 12:51 pm

I write a lot of songs, but there's a lot of them that aren't remotely appropriate for my band. So with nowhere to put them I normally scratch them out as videos on my phone and occasionally share the better ones. I've never bothered actually recording them. I don't have a drumkit at home to record (or easy access to one) so I EZdrummer'd the best I could bother with. Whatever.

I was going for a British-folk-punk-Americana-slacker-country thing. Think: Petty and the Heartbreakers, Replacements, Mid-era Bright Eyes... But sung by a common Englishman.

Recorded at home, with 1 mic (U87 clone) and a bullshit Scarlett 4i4. My Gibson LG-2, Tele & Champ, Hohner Harp, Yamaha Reface YC.

Here it is.

I've recorded all 5 of these this week, although the songs were mostly written over a year ago.

Cheers! Yeah, It's hard to ignore a personal style I guess :D

Oh, I've just added another one, but it's definitely a silly one. It's on the original link.

Loved it!

And if you do any more and fancy real drums instead of EZ drummer or whatever, give me a shout, I'd be happy to do them for you.

Also, Japanese Elvis rocks ;D

Thanks man! I'm fine self-contained here. I have access to drums (and a drummer in my band) but I like doing things like this for now, it's more 'immediate'. When I finally sort out a space at home, I'll have a kit setup with a few mics ready to go.

I have finished all 5 songs for this EP now, they're all online. If you have the time, I hope you enjoy them.

Immediacy is a very underrated thing when recording. What you're doing sounds ace, you've obviously hit on a moment, and it works. Love it all :)

I listened to the entire thing and enjoyed it.

I could learn a lot from you in songwriting, recording, and mixing. It sounds great for what you are going for. I would love to be able to release something like this.

The last song has a real The Libertines feel and I say that as a good thing. That song tickles my fuzzies.

Nice job Johnny. Good one.

Walter

Thank you for the kind words Walter :-* I can hear that touch of The Libertines in the last one now you mention it... It probably has something to do with the shuffle beat and guitar tone.

My actual band just sounds like these songs but more punk/emo, probably because all my songs are written the same way originally. My band is here if you're interested.

Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Awesome stuff!! I think you are selling yourself short.. they definitely don’t sound quickly mashed together or anything. Everything sounds really nicely done. Great work! Losing Friends is Easy makes me think of Elliott Smith. That’s definitely a good thing to me.
Now count every rhododendron in this cool mountain light, I made more mistakes than that just tonight

Thanks dude. And I'll take that E.Smith comparison... Although I am wholly not worthy of it.
