no need - mass of the fermenting dregs

probably my favorite song that came out during the year. kinda a shame i don't think it's going to be on the setlist for the upcoming tour but defo a band i listened to a lot this year. especially in the last 6 weeks or so constantly riding back and forth from the hospital.

if we're going by spotify's idea of most listened to, for the 3rd year in a row, it was sewerslvt in my top artist.

I didn't take much time to explore new music last year, and mostly listened to old favorites. I added some stuff from a few of the artists from upthread, and am looking forward to exploring those more. I did find MACHO at the end of December though and am loving all of their stuff.

MACHO - Info Bros
MACHO - Rats & Larceny

Honestly 2023 was the year that I really didn’t care for new music and did only buy records on two occasions, the Surfer Joe Summer Festival in Livorno, Italy and a concert of my band‘s new trumpeter‘s multi-instrumental solo concert (he replaced a guitarist). In comparison to 20-50 a year during the pandemic)

Hell even The Wytches (who used to be one of my absolute favorite bands) put out a new album - and I didn‘t even care to listen… I wanted to buy it straight away… but their Distribution failed. It‘s not available in mainland Europe (at least not in my top 5 shops) and I‘m not paying 20€ for shipping + custom fees for a brand new album.

But Also I don‘t use Spotify - and I currently don‘t have proper headphones - so listening to music happens mostly in the car (cds…so yeah mostly stuff I own for several years) or at home listening to actual records…

So my top 5 (most listened to, in no particular order) artists 2023 are:
  • Langhorns (Mission Exotica - I have that CD since 2008 and it‘s my favorite car drive music)
  • Messer Chups (Don‘t Say Cheese & Visiting the Skeleton in the Closet, bought both CDs at Surfer Joe‘s)
  • The Akulas (Rustines. Saw the 60s inspired cover and had to have it, also from Surfer Joe…even they didn‘t play there. Glad I got this on Vinyl - also I feel connected to their name through my own band (Tentacula))
  • Gaye Su Akyol (Anadolu Ejderi, great album, actually my girlfriend‘s favorite - but I love her music too! We even saw her and her (reduced) band live)
  • Calexico - Feast of Wire (we‘ve been at the 20th Anniversary show… great intimate concert! But sadly they played exactly my two favorite songs from that album not as great as on they could have…but I guess I‘m hard to please whenever I have real favorite tunes)
Maybe I find more joy in discovering new music (again) in 2024. or at least more time for listening to some…hopefully.

Apparently, I listened to a bunch of podcasts and an Imperial Shit-ton of Phillip Glass.

Haha, that was me too! Mishima, Company, and Glassworks over and over. And many, many episodes of Stuff You Should Know.

Also, just found the band Dick Move last week and have been loving their 2023 album, Wet.

improbably, AmAnSet reappeared after an 18-year layoff with the new album

American Analog Set – For Forever

and a series of B-sides that keep rolling out. it's massive, in that understated AmAnSet kind of way

I was completely unaware of this. Awesome!

I’d also like to nominate Hayden Pedigo’s The Happiest Times I Ever Ignored for my picks. It came out in 2023, but I only heard it for the first time yesterday. It’s a very cool mix of old timey and modern fingerstyle guitar.

One album took over a lot of my listening: Slow Pulp - Yard
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?
