DD seemed like a mensch and I really wish his last few years could have been more comfortable and kinder to him. Certainly one of my earliest influences as a player.
I often wonder what the music scene would have looked like had the British Invasion not happened (at least when it did) and what the Surf Music scene and the Southern Californian music scene in general would have evolved into.
Good find either way whitewatersky.

i hate saying this but he's not far off my gauges...... on my shortscales. my short scales are in standard and have roto greys on them which is 13, 17, 26w, 34w, 44w, 54w.
does anyone know what brand he played? if it's rotos, that's quite a feat. if it's earnieball's, then less so because they have a thinner core

Yes yes and yes!
That man was only still touring the last few years to be able to pay his medical bills... among many things you (in the US) are so badly in need of a health-care revolution! Also not too far away with the string gauges on my guitars (11-56, but I haven‘t yet tried flats or a wound g-string?
That would in deed be a nice alternative reality scenario... but at least over the last few years the surf-rock community appears to be growing again. Still my favorite style when it comes to instrumental music!

Well, to put it in perspective, your 11-gauge high E only has 60% of the cross-sectional area of his 14-gauge high E, which is like saying that an 8.5-gauge high E is "not too far away" from your 11's.MayTheFuzzBeWithYou wrote: ↑Thu Aug 13, 2020 12:02 pmAlso not too far away with the string gauges on my guitars (11-56, but I haven‘t yet tried flats or a wound g-string?
Your low E is very similar, but jeez, his first three things are absolutely massive by modern standards.

Haha. I already “saw something like that coming“ - without ever doing the math about it - I found your comparison quite fitting
But I was indeed referring to the low strings only.
For the high strings that is indeed massive! I even think he used a 16 as a high e! I guess it would take me a whole while and quite some pain to get used to that...
It’s almost like Baritone-strings on a Strat?!
Also I like it that you called them “first three things“ whether that was intentional or auto correct - it hits the nail on the head!
But bear in mind that he put on the strings upside down... so like on a reverse headstock which equals/feels like a bit of a tension relieve on the high strings but also like a slight increase of the tension on the lower ones. Which might not be so drastic as I imagine it - but surely a thing to consider...

Hah, that was definitely autocorrect.MayTheFuzzBeWithYou wrote: ↑Thu Aug 13, 2020 3:39 pmFor the high strings that is indeed massive! I even think he used a 16 as a high e! I guess it would take me a whole while and quite some pain to get used to that...

And did I confuse myself and remember 14 when he uses 16 gauge? Jesus, that's more than double the cross-sectional area of an 11. Insane.

Am I the only one who thought that this was about a deathbed confession from the guy who played guitar in The Meters...

I always read that his gauges were 16 - 60!
