I mean, shit, if all the man ever did was "Jump", he still would have done well with his life.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

Totally, but that was the beginning of the end for me. Van Hagar as one of my friends said, turned them from Van Halen into Journey, and not the catchy Journey.

No doubt. I was reading an Eddie Van Halen obituary and he said something like in Van Halen, with DLR, there were four people in the band, three guys that liked rock music and one guy that liked dance music.

And once they got Sammy Hagar in the band there were four guys that liked rock, ponderous, joyless, lead-footed rock.

And frankly when I was young I had some Van Halen, but it always was on the fence for me. And then the Van Hagar era came and that did it for me, I wrote the whole concept off completely.

But as I age I can now see that the David Lee Roth era Van Halen was actually pretty fun.

When I lived in San Francisco, I loved that stuff.

But then, I love jets. Love 'em.

I lived right on a flight line for a year, hornets coming and going all the time. Didn't like that. But I'd already been soured on the Blue Falcons after living in Seattle and when you're trying to get work done and they're 100 feet overhead every 5 minutes all day long, you just don't forgive that kind of bullshit. I love jets, too. I was born and raised in airplane country, and find the sound of planes soothing.

Except for fucking Hornets.

It sure was. I liked them as a kid, though even at a young age I never cared for Van Hagar. But when I was in high school, and all the depressed music like Smashing Pumpkins and stuff was popular, I retreated into KISS and Van Halen. I mean, I was a teenager, I didn't want to be all sad all the time, I craved fun and Van Halen delivered that. I liked crazy rocking with a lot of "woo"s. It was just what I needed.

Well, that's what the motherfuckers fly. Hornets. All day every day for a week, Hornets swooping past so low that they could crash into a building. It's terrible. There's nothing soothing about that sound. You spend your whole week like this:

i gave my first strat a paint job on vacation...
it's not an exact replica (mine has rosewood, black hardware, a zebra pickup, and an MXR knob) but it is close enough in spirit for me.

Here's a song that Eddie's son wrote about him. Not really my kind of music but it's very clear that whatever else Eddie Van Halen was, he was a father who loved his son very much and his son loved him.

brief glimpse of a Jazzmaster (!) in his studio at the 00:17 mark :w00t: wonder what the story was, as this was shot in '98.
