Posted on the Misc section, but sticking it here as it’s more appropriate.

Love him or hate him he was a guitar icon.

I'm pretty gutted by this, tbh.

One of the first things I ever remember hearing as a kid was Eruption, and since then I've always made space for some Van Halen in my life. Even as my tastes swerved into punk/post punk/whatever I've always loved them. Ed always clearly loved what he did and that joy was audible in every note he played. He also had a cool, individualistic sound and set me on my love of MXR pedals.

RIP

I was a fan.

Punk/hipster younger me always made fun of him until sometime in the mid 90’s when I started playing with some guys into classic rock. Mostly obscure/one hit wonders stuff. We’d been doing the Kinks You Really Got Me, and one of the guys said let’s do it the VH way. All eyes looked at me the J Mascis inspired lead player and said go learn it. Then they wanted to lead in with Eruption... I gained a good appreciation for VH.

My kids are young and are more into top 40 than what my wife and I put on, but they love VH, especially 1984.

Really the first rock guitar player that caught my ear when I was young.

I would go over to my friend’s house and listen to 1984 because my parents really only like classical music.

He was never my thing...but obviously he had loads of talent and was super innovative. Rock and Roll wouldn't be the same without him. Peace on his journey.

Damn. Guy could PLAY.

Not usually my kinda stuff, but it bled across boundaries that I wouldn't have crossed otherwise.

Onward, EVH!

I still secretly have a guitar-crush on the EVH/Wolfgang/MusicMan guitar shape- even the dinky headstock. One day I'll have one in the collection.

Dude was the most innovative lead player of his era. Shit, dude was probably the best rhythm player too. For all his talent you could tell he was always playing in service to the song. I can hear a bar of a VH solo and tell you which song it was from. Each one had it's own voice. The dudes sense of melody was untouched in the era. Maybe Rhodes comes closest.

Dude pushed the boat out and changed everything.

Bugger.

Sad to hear, he was only 65.

I was too young to grow up listening to his music when he was at his peak, and by the time I started playing guitar, I was sick of all the lame, cheesy imitators he had spawned. Still, I can't hold those people against him. He did all you can ask of a musician, finding his own voice and expressing it with a high level of talent. His impact on guitar culture was and is massive.

He exuded joy every time I saw him. A jolt of pure happiness.

Some of you have hit on it: Van Halen's charm was that they were having fun. Eddie was virtuoso but it never got in the way of the songwriting, and even his most extreme playing fit the song. I'm just about 50 and Van Halen was sort of scary to me when I was a little kid, I didn't listen to them in favor of punk and other stuff later on, and only really came back to them later in life, when I rethought all the classic rock I'd rejected.

The Roth-era stuff all rules, and I could listen to "Unchained" over and over again, it's like the dictionary definition of rocking out. I later learned how Van Halen came up in this weird system of backyard parties, how Eddie first played with his back to the audience so nobody could steal his tapping inventions. Then, there are some crazy stories about his later years, which included holding a gun to the head of the Limp Bizkit guy in public, something I suspect many of us have fantasized about. I never expected to get any more great music out of him, but am super happy with what the guy did do.
