Is there a topic for this? I can’t see one.

Talk to me about your delicious vinyl & setups

I think there is. But anyway.. mine hasn’t changed much since the late 90’s. Technics SL1210 MKII, Quad 303/33, Tannoy 15” Berkeley’s. I did add some Celestion studio 66 speakers about 15 years ago. I’ve recently been tempted by the lyngdorf tdai 2170 amp…as a couple of my friends have them in studios and they are stunning. Not sure I would pony up 2 grand though.

I have a U-Turn Orbit with an Ortofan 2M cartridge, a Schitt preamp, and Klipsch RP-15 (I think?) speakers along with a Klipsch sub.

I personally find listening to vinyl to be an unpleasant experience overall, so I pretty much never listen to it. It is mostly a matter of convenience for me. I have been listening to the Crazy Horse live record that came out earlier this year (Way Down in the Rust Bucket) and the idea of getting up 8 times to flip/change the LP is unacceptable. I am also not an audio snob so I am happy to listen to digital files all day long. However, I like collecting records by my favorite artists, mostly as interesting artifacts more than anything.

Tannoy 15” Berkeley’s
Oh wow, those are still so adored. Not seen any for a long time.

I’m thinking about new speakers to compliment my new kitchen space. Looking forward to getting out to a shop & listening to some. Not that it will help audition for an open space with screed floor. But exciting to upgrade my speakers which were a quick buy to replace some loved 70s Magnat floorstanders.

They are yeh...I like big, old speakers, I'd actually go for Ardens if any showed up..but they never have and probably wouldn't pay the price they go for nowadays.

My setup is fairly simple: KLH Model 20 turntable w/integrated amp into Bose 301V bookshelf speakers. The turntable/amp is solid state, but it has a nice, rich sound nonetheless, and it's housed in a very handsome mid-century wood case. Prior to the Bose speakers, I was using my Dad's Advent U3s, but they're too large for my current space, and the Bose sound fine. I'm clearly not an audiophile by any means, but this setup works great for me.

Records have always been a part of my life, and I can still recall buying them new in the store as a kid, the gradual transition to cassettes as a preferred medium, then CDs... but I was always shopping thrift stores for used vinyl or smaller labels that still pressed vinyl records. It's been a constant for me I'm pretty vigilant about maintaining a stock of records that I'm actually going to listen to as opposed to a collector mindset, so I manage to keep myself right at around 500 records between buying new stuff and moving along things I don't listen to.

Not mine, but the same model:

That’s beautiful 😻

I’m similar with my collection. Starting in the 90s with my dad’s records I’ve collected fairly consistently (apart from a dip in the 00s where no major labels were pressing) but always selling on things I no longer listen to. So the collection is a representation of my current taste. And strangely now there’s more soul, shoegaze & French 60s pop than hardcore, emo or grunge. Funny how the world turns out.

I'm very much the same – I never would have thought I'd have so many soul, dub, classic country, and jazz records in my collection! Like you, I now have all my parents' records too, as they switched over to CDs and streaming services years ago. I even have everything set up the stereo component/record shelf my Dad built back in the late 70s. My father-in-law gave me HIS father's collection of jazz 78s and early LPs a few years ago, which was a great addition. I like the feeling of all that family history on the record shelf in addition to my own collection.

And I agree with you, the Model 20 is really pretty. Mine is a bit banged up, but it's still a nice looking piece of machinery.
