Re: Recommend some twee 80’s jangle, please.
The Cherry Red indie pop box set has a ton of great stuff.
The Field Mice are great until it just becomes too much. (Trembling Blue Stars are worth a listen, too).
Funnily, I never would have considered the Pale Saints in this category (but I do love them).
Postcard records
Summershine records (Ric Menck, Velvet Crush, etc).
There are some great American 90s bands, too (Sofites, Tiger Trap, Go Sailor (not sure why three Rose Melberg bands immediately came to mind!), K records, some KRS).
... where'd I leave my mittens again...?

Nice. 28th day is the only band I know on that. My commute home just got a lot more jangly.Singlebladepickup wrote: ↑Tue Nov 30, 2021 2:57 pmhttps://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/va ... 1983-1987/

I’m not familiar with the classification of Twee at all but I dig XTC and maybe even more so Dukes of the Stratosphere. Are they considered Twee? I read about an NME compilation called C86 that seems like maybe a good place to start? Looking forward to checking out all these recommendations.

I love this thread, but what is "Twee"? It is hard to tell from this thread when some of the recommendations are Orange Juice and MBV.
I am listening to Demonstration Tapes now and I love it! You say this predates twee, but just from this sound I would describe it as twee without even knowing that twee is a genre. Great suggestion!stevejamsecono wrote: ↑Mon Nov 29, 2021 7:51 pmDolly Mixture especially was a recent and happy discovery. 'Demonstration Tapes' blew me away and I'm shocked they aren't more well known.

So I think for the purposes of the OP's question it's a very specific strain of white, indie guitar rock from the mid-80s with some specific stylistic traits (jangily rickenbacker-type sounds, naive sounding vocals, very homebody/crushy lyrical topic matter, simple yet catchy songwriting, We Anderson-esque aesthetic sense in dress and album art) that was crystalized by the C86 tape. It was definitely informed by things that came prior (i.e. 60s garage rock, post-punk bands like OJ, Undertones, etc.), but had a 'moment' around that time that seemed to create an ongoing interest in it.mediocreplayer wrote: ↑Wed Dec 01, 2021 12:06 pmI love this thread, but what is "Twee"? And yes, I have to imagine Dolly Mixture had some influence on twee bands in the UK. The only distinction I'd make for them is I think there are bands that 'happen' to be twee (i.e. DM, OJ, etc.) and bands that set out to be twee (i.e. Pastels, Beat Happening, Field Mice, etc.). Good music can come from either sort, but I think the aesthetic concerns of the latter were more considered.
And you find out life isn't like that

I only now got the concept of 'twee' as a category ... upon further rumination... Talulah Gosh, maybe? or Pains of being pure at heart? Popguns?
Nobody exists on purpose.

I’ve tried to get into Belle & Sebastian, and I think they’re just a too competent as musicians to be interesting to me.
