I was in grad school when the Alphaville version was released and had a forced break (partially anyway) from popular culture. So it must be Dylan... although I have a memory of someone other than Dylan singing it when the emotion hit me... I dk.mediocreplayer wrote: ↑Thu Feb 10, 2022 12:51 pmDylan or Alphaville? There are quite a few, especially choice pieces of Nick Cave and Tom Waits (Kentucky Avenue and On the Nickel wreck me).
But the last time I actually bawled to a song was Spiritualized - Cool Waves. A lot of Ladies and Gentlemen, We're Floating in Space gets to me, but this one probably more than any other. I'm not an addict, but for whatever reason songs about addiction tend to mess me up.

Sweet Heart, Sweet Light fucks me up more. Specifically Little Girl, Too Late, and Life is a Problem. I got way too many tracks to list cause I'm a huge softie.SignoftheDragon wrote: ↑Thu Feb 10, 2022 11:43 pmTHIIIISSSSS.Ceylon wrote: ↑Thu Feb 10, 2022 5:23 pmThere are quite a few, especially choice pieces of Nick Cave and Tom Waits (Kentucky Avenue and On the Nickel wreck me).

The Band- "All La Glory" wistful misting. Just thinking about Levon loving his daughter.
"Acadian Driftwood" heartbroken welling at Rick Danko at the very end missing his home. Mostly just missing all three of them.
Deerhoof- "Jagged Fruit" sheer beauty. There's a feeling of powerful compassion in the recapitulation at the end.
Flaming Lips- "Waiting For Superman" premptive grief.
Bowie- "Wild is the Wind" it's just emotional
Jonathan Richman- "That Summer Feeling"
"Just Look at Me" it's personal, but obvious if you know that tune.
VU- "Pale Blue Eyes" sentimental reasons.
Neil Young- "I Believe in You"
Christ I'm a boomer
I'll cry while listening to Silver Jews/ Purple Mountains, but that's usually just my depression turning serious again. If I start listening to Plastic Ono Band too, take away my shoelaces.
Edit: well now I'm just sitting here crying

Jonathan Richman used to live on the street next to the one where I currently live. I think he moved a few years ago. I guess he’s still in town, though (saw him a couple years ago performing at a local high school theater festival).

I think he runs a masonry business out in Cali. Like a fancy one that does landscaping features and builds pizza ovens.HedonismBot wrote: ↑Sun Feb 13, 2022 12:18 amJonathan Richman used to live on the street next to the one where I currently live. He's a guy who did it perfect. The whole being a musician thing. Made up his songs, touched hearts, became a legend, but he never seemed to have an ego about it and he lives his life.
I overheard a father and teenaged son at Guitar Center and the kid was talking about his love of JR. Even the zoomers find and love him. Meanwhile he's picking out bricks for a patio.

Re: Tracks that make you cry
so i know people clown on the offspring but i still love them. my friend got me the casette tape for smash as a christmas present and said they've never seen me happier. i think gone away is a super underrated song too. so when most people thing of the offspring, they think of songs like pretty fly or hit that, but the weird thing about most offspring fans is those are NEVER the songs they'll bring up. it's always songs like gone away or the kids aren't alright. hell, look at songs like gotta get away, those lyrics are all about intrusive thoughts.windmill wrote: ↑Fri Feb 11, 2022 2:21 amIts all a bit personal
But some others here will know.
The Offspring - Gone Away
gone away always feels like the idea of processing death which is an interesting topic imho.

I don't think we can avoid, while mentioning the often misread skatepunk genre with regards to tearjerkers, No Use For A Name. Tony Sly (RIP) wrote some of the hardest-hitting punk songs ever. So many are 'right in the feels'

Re: Tracks that make you cry
agreed. a lot of surprisingly deep topics in the genre and i feel if some folk just sat down and listened to the lyrics for some of these songs, you'd see they were way more complex than just "government bad because they won't let me skate" bro hymn - pennywise comes to mind. a song about both mourning and celebrating their former bass player's death.johnnysomersett wrote: ↑Mon Feb 14, 2022 12:02 amI don't think we can avoid, while mentioning the often misread skatepunk genre with regards to tearjerkers, No Use For A Name. ok. but here's a question that caused an actual heated argument that got us kicked out a restaurant for how aggressive we were about it. (maybe getting a bunch of 30-something former alternative kids in the same room and firing out that question wasn't the best idea)
given pop-punk evolved from skatepunk and there is a lot of overlap between the two, at what point do you say something is no longer one or the other? i think it's cultural but no one could even agree what that culture was.
