No idea re: 7 Seconds, but Minor Threat is pretty easy. Lyle used a late 70s LP Standard and a Marshall 2203 Master Volume head with an era-appropriate 4x12 cab or two. Less gain than you'd think -- he was going for articulation rather than fuzz. When Brian switched to guitar, he rocked similarly (various Gibsons -- either LP Deluxe with Dimarzios or SG) on an identical amp setup. He swapped over to the JCM 800 (same guts, updated cosmentics) circa Dag Nasty.DeathJag wrote: ↑Sun Jun 25, 2023 2:55 pmThis is a wild one, but does anybody know what kind of guitar and amp they use for their early stuff like Skins Brains and Guts? Same for Minor Threat - anyone know what they used? I absolutely love their sound so I've always been curious. These two bands have some of the best sounding mixes of all classic punk rock in my opinion. I also love Fang's Landshark, that guitar is massive too. Reagan Youth's first press had a great mix (fuck that New Red Archives cymbal-less remix!), also LA's Wasted Youth's Reagan's In is basically a perfect punk mix.
In my opinion punk bands don't sound very punk without the guitar and cymbals foregrounded in the mix.

Typically they used an SG or LP goldtop and the amp is marshall-y (looks like a park head). They also use a fuzz on the early stuff. They had a busted up looking oly strat on a few of the videos I have seen. The later stuff is all marshalls and gibsons

I used to be cool, now I just complain about prices.

Hey wow thanks for the replies folks! Much appreciated. I must admit I've barely even held a Gibson, Epiphone, Guild, or anything compared to a Fender. But I love their sound so this is super helpful. One of these days I may try to get a vintage Marshall. I already want a vintage AC30. Dammit.

Re: 7 Seconds
I bet you could get this same sound with the right pedals. I just dialed in a really nice late husker du/sugar tone with my Jag and EQD Dunes the other night that I plan to use on most of my newer material I've been writing. I'd say if you use a rat with the distortion up and the filter at like 2pm you'd get close to a 7 Seconds tone with any guitar using humbuckers.DeathJag wrote: ↑Mon Jun 26, 2023 9:30 amHey wow thanks for the replies folks! Yeah! Thanks! I've got an 80s Hondo Longhorn copy guitar with a single humbucker that only has two wires coming out of it. Using an 80s DS-1 into a '72 Twin with a single 15" speaker, it sounds awesomely gnarly, comparable to those tones. I do wanna see what an old Rat sounds like also. "Which Rat?" haha!

Re: 7 Seconds
I have a 91 turbo rat, an 86 small box and a newer op07 version from 2011. I think the newer version (cheap AF) would get you there, it lacks clarity when you dial up the OD and that is sort of what happens on the 7 seconds stuffDeathJag wrote: ↑Wed Jun 28, 2023 5:34 amYeah! Re: 7 Seconds
Thank you for the thought! I was considering getting one to try out because they're so cheap. However, if the older ones sound better, then I don't want to bother with a new one. All of this must wait until I work again so at the moment it's DS-1 all day.

Love Dag Nasty.....A toss up between Shawn or Dave....I guess Dave has the definitive "Can I Say" version, but love the Shaw versions.....never really heard the Peter versions though.

Re: 7 Seconds
I've got a supercrunch clone that sort of sounds like Walk Together, Rock Together tones maxed out. I have no idea how they afforded marshalls and gibsons when they were kids.panoramic wrote: ↑Mon Jun 26, 2023 9:23 amhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Fuh2-9Bql4
