Essential Songs for a 90s cover band
Thinking of putting together a 90s cover band. Give me songs that must be in our repertoire.
We'll probably be sticking mostly to the alternative realm but feel free to include other genres as well.
Thanks in advance!

closing time - semisonic (ideally make this the song you end on)
flagpole sitta - Harvey danger
so bohemian like you - the dandy warhols
my favorite game - the cardigans (or lovefool)
i'm trying to avoid a lot of the obvious songs that go without saying (smells like teen spirit, wonderwall) btw, if you do this version of wonderwall live, you will have my eternal respect.

The Lemonheads - Into Your Arms
Sugar - If I Can't Change Your Mind
And a Gin Blossoms one, "Hey Jealousy" is obviously the big hit but I like "Til I Hear It From You" too.

Trippin on a Hole in a Paper Heart - Stone Temple Pilots
All Apologies - Nirvana
Both of these are crowd pleasers. Trippin’ is especially good, if you have a lead guitar player who likes challenging work. The solo is not easy.
I’d add more now, but I’m half busy at the moment.

i'm one of those people who always say the 2000's didn't start until september 12th 2001. so i'd still count it.seenoevil II wrote: ↑Sat Feb 03, 2024 9:55 amTeenage Dirtbag- Wheatus (shoot, that's 2000)

That entire record is slept on way too much. So many cool sounds. Great songs.BoringPostcards wrote: ↑Sat Feb 03, 2024 11:31 amTrippin on a Hole in a Paper Heart - Stone Temple Pilots

I was driving into town in Iowa City for the start of my sophmore year and that song was on the radio and it was a beautiful day and there was just a fucking vibe going on so I've always had fond memories of that song.
Oh, and it's pretty easy to play on guitar lol!

Re: Essential Songs for a 90s cover band
Kinda depends. There were multiple 90s.
Do you want to take an "alternative is now mainstream" vibe?
Be the house band at the Bronze?
The annoyingly smug guy in the dorm who volunteers at the radio station?
I'd want to hear more of the indie stuff, myself
Breeders - Cannonball
Superchunk - Slack motherfucker
Pixies
Something britpop (Pulp?)
Supergrass
Elastica
Liz Phair
maybe some indie-esque cover of a mainstream pop song (which is the true heart of the nineties), e.g. TLC No Scrubs

Hmmm, I'd say that after 1997, it went from pure 90's to Y2K vibes. And Y2K vibes ran straight into 9/11 (which, as a Jersey boy, hit pretty hard).s_mcsleazy wrote: ↑Sat Feb 03, 2024 1:07 pmi'm one of those people who always say the 2000's didn't start until september 12th 2001. so i'd still count it.seenoevil II wrote: ↑Sat Feb 03, 2024 9:55 amTeenage Dirtbag- Wheatus (shoot, that's 2000)

THAT SAID:
I'm Just a Girl- No Doubt
Kiss Me- None the Richer
I spent the summer of 98 in Ireland with family, and my core memories are of that song and Barbie by Aqua, that and the head butt. Damn, this thread making the nostalgia hit hard.
