what are some recent bands/artists ya'll into?

Post by s_mcsleazy » Tue Aug 20, 2024 10:27 am

so i feel on OSG, we often get bogged down in the past so i thought it might be fun to talk about some more recent (last 7 years or so) are ya'll into.

gudgeon best way to describe this band is jesus lizard if they were the innsmouth house band.

spanish love songs some earnest as fuck modern punk.

l.s. dunes kinda feels like cheating with this one because it's basically a supergroup of bands from the 00's but fuck it, still great post-hardcore.

your arms are my cocoon a love letter to 90's emo/screamo. sadly missed my chance to see them recently.

coilguns thank you johnny for getting me into this band. just really solid post-hardcore with an interesting edge.

pom pom squad cute gay cheerleader alt rock. if that's not enough to sell you on them, i dunno how else i can.
offset guitars resident bass player.

Hitsujibungaku - Stumbled across them in YouTube and now totally obsessed. Japanese Alternative trio with offset guitars and plenty of catchy tunes.

I'm not really familiar with all the endless genres and subgenres so I'll just list these from more metally to less metally:

Monolord - Empress Rising
Vulkan - This Visual Hex
Black Peaks - King
Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats - I See Through You
White Lung - Sycophant
LEAP - Exit Signs
The Mars Volta - Blacklight Shine
Sylvan Esso - Die Young

Bonus tracks (not particularly new, just wanted to share):

Bloc Party - Octopus
Peeping Tom - Mojo
The Splits - Action

Dev Lemons is one of my favorite current artists. I’m not sure where to put her genre wise; she’s all over the place. She does a Youtube series where she remakes other people’s songs without hearing what she’s doing which is completely unhinged.

Devon Again’s last live video was also really inspiring. It’s got everything; teenage angst, distorted guitars, glitchy vocal samples and a saxophone solo.

You already mentioned Spanish Love Songs so I’ll skip them but Sincere Engineer deserves a mention for amazing current punk band too. Drummer from Into it. Over it. for those that care about those things.

I’ve been a fan of Boston Manor since they were a pop-punk band just starting out. The last few years they’ve clearly outgrown that label with a sound growing steadily more heavy and experimenting with electronic music. Love these guys. Easily in my top three favourite bands ever.

Ripe puts out some cool pop/funk music that I like to listen to as some subtle background noise and dance to with my daughter and partner.

Theo Katzman will never leave my playlists as far as I’m concerned. He’s shown himself to be way more than one of the funk guys from Vulfpeck. Great musician, great songwriter and great guy too.

I will not mention the Menzingers as their last two albums were boring as fuck.

Hell yeah, I love Pom Pom Squad! Saw them last time they played London and had a wonderful time. I might be getting a chopped tele body off of their guitarist next time he makes a batch.

Illuminati Hotties have just released a new album, which I am yet to listen to so this is one of my faves from their second record. It’s Sarah Tudzin’s project, she’s a producer mostly known for working on Boygenius’ ‘the record’.

Really loving Babe Haven’s new record, for your shouty fast heavy needs.

Black Honey are maybe my favourite band. Fully independent rock, lots of 90s and Tarantino soundtrack vibes.

Faetooth released their debut last year and it’s frankly unfair just how good a doom record it is.

Problem Patterns are an awesome Irish punky band I’ve stumbled across at a few festivals this summer and really enjoyed. Everyone’s running around swapping instruments and having a great time.

White Lung - Sycophant
Missed this on the first read around, I got into White Lung just in time for them to break up. Good tunes though.

I also forgot to add Dead Pioneers who are a killer punk band writing about existing in America as a native person.

I could swear band names are getting more generic by the minute. I mean, I really can't tell if this list is supposed to be a joke or not.

None of them is quite as bad as Car Seat Headrest, though.

So fully agree with

LS Dunes

Spanish love songs ( newest album is so good)

Black Honey - really interesting guitar tones for an indie band and excellent live.

Will also add

Mercy Union - similar feel to…….

Gaslight Anthem - whose album post reform is ace

Lovebreakers - uk “garage power pop” I guess

Teenage wrist - 90s influenced alt rock. Smashing pumpkins adjacent

Can’t believe I didn’t say Blondshell.

Her song with Bully from the start of the year will probably top my Spotify wrapped, and her latest single is taking over my brain right now.

Well that was weird & wonderful. Reminded me of all the superb desert blues acts such as Tamikrest.

I've been listening to NZ punk band Dick Move a lot the last 6 months or so. Highly recommended.
