Rowland S. Howard

Post by blacktiger » Fri Dec 22, 2006 9:05 pm

There's a lot of appreciation floating around in here, but no self-respecting offset forum is complete without a thread dedicated to the almighty RSH.

Whether you love him solo, with the Birthday Party, Crime & the City Solution, These Immortal Souls or even the Young Charlatans, let's give the man the props he deserves.

Good stuff!

In the late 90s I got talking to a couple of guys who knew him .. apparently he's got a huge back catalogue of excellent songs that he's never really bothered to do anything with. They were saying if he had the motivation to push himself forward he'd be really well known .. not that there's anything wrong with remaining slightly obscure, but it would be nice to hear at least some of that material.

would really like to hear some of it! really a shame that he passed away :(

there's a documentary comming out about him up untill his death called autoluminesent http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onay3kOadoI" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
looks really good (and sad).

i used to do a cover of autoluminescent with my old band. both of the solo albums are really amazing. also the some velvet morning cover with lydia lunch is still one of my favs

I saw him a few times at one of my Locals in St Kilda, was a real shock when he passed on, was one of those people you expected to always be around in some form

His basic set-up was Jag > MXR Distortion+ > MXR Blue Box > Twin Reverb. I've read that he also used a Little Big Muff and a Roland Space Echo at various points as well.

I really hope that film gets released - the 'trailer' for it has been floating around for months and months (possibly years?), but I've not heard anything further about a proper release (I suspect there may be $$$ issues :( )

I love These Immortal Souls. They were so underrated. You can't even find their cds on amazon. Hope they reissue them soon.

It's supposedly coming out this month in Australia. There's also an RSH anthology on the way from Liberation.
