The bands / scenes that you just hate, hate, hate!

Post by idiotbear » Sat Mar 10, 2007 7:35 am

So I think that if you're serious about music, you have to know what you hate as much as what you love. I certainly know that I expend a LOT of energy slating shit bands. I suspect that when I've lost the ability to be aggressively hostile about all the rubbish out there, I'll have to accept that I'm losing touch with new music, and it's time to don my slippers and light my pipe.

The thing that makes me angriest isn't bubblegum pop - in fact, I like bubblegum pop sometimes. What really makes me furious is"serious" bands who are a) shit and b) hyped by the music press and scenesters.

Examples from recent years of bands like this who make me cross:

The Libertines (and all the other Pete N Carl (tm) offshoots)
The Kooks
The Twang (NME reckons they're amazing; I agree with Lauren Laverne and say that they sound like Pete Doherty doing U2 at a karaoke bar)
The Fratellis (noticing a pattern here? - there are a lot of "The" bands here)

And many, many more.

Oh, and bands that make 21 year old music journalists all excited because they do drugs. It's such a boooooring rock cliche, and yet the hacks still lap it up...

And another thing.... bands who think being working class automatically makes them better than everyone else, which is another stupid cliche perpetuated by the press.

So c'mon, where's your grrrrrrrrrrrrr?  >:( ;D

it's not really about getting angry about it...but, I'll play...I hate the term "scene' to begin with.

it usually means that it's a bunch of bands that all sound the same.

in the past year loads of my friends have done their own solo projects, and I'm very proud to say that none of them even sound remotely alike.

it's refreshing, and I think what keeps music in my heart burning.

I just tend to do my own thing and not pay attention the whole "Kooks, Fratellis etc" scene...I find their music retarded, but that's just my opinion.

as a sidenote, I'd rather be a featured artist in a magazine like "Uncut" instead of an NME darling

Good strategy. I'm generally the same, but I still weaken occasionally and watch MTV2 or buy the NME. Nostalgia, I guess. Anyway, both experiences make me angry, and that's the kind of thing that I quite enjoy getting angry about  ;D

hehe...yeah, the MTV2 thing can get annoying...they got that all the time on at our rehearsal space.

I tend to think of it as yet another reason to make interesting music :)

I'll agree with that  ;D

I'm  most 'scenes' as you put it, but there are two main areas that really get on my nerves.
a) Pretentious bands e.g. G'n'R
b) Corporate Bands e.g. bands who change their music to be radio friendly, not just blanking expletives, but changing the entire song to try and sell as many copies as possible.

I hate all this new Pop-Rock NME has dubbed as indie (Bloc Party, Larrikin Love, The Kooks etc etc). I also hate bands like G'N'R' and hair metal a la Motley Crue. I can't stand Red Hot Chili Peppers who everyone seems to love, and I don't like Nirvana (apart from Bleach and In Utero). I hate a lot more but I'd be listing for a while, however I love a lot more than I hate  :D

Like when Black Eyed Peas changed they're song from "Let's Get Retarded" to "Let's Get it Started."  That pissed me off, bad.

My personal favourite corporate whore moment was when the inimitably shit Shed Seven changed the lyrics to their plod-rock hit "Speakeasy" to "at The Link it's easy" for a mobile phone store commercial....

How about weezer's  H*** Pipe?

They actually have it listed like that on the MTV website  (er... not that I've ever been there, mind you) .      ;)

When you watch the video, you can hear that 'hash' is blanked out. Granted, it's not weezer's doing.. but it still gets me.

Rappers can rap about slappin' and rapin' bitches and killing cops (or at least strongly imply it)....  but weezer can't say hash?

???

It's a crazy world...

It truly is. But Weezer are still great in my books.

I would just like to say, although it may get me murdered, I quite like the Fratellis and don't mind the Kooks  :P

The new My Chemical Romance is an example of being corporate IMO, whereas their first two albums were pretty cool

I like pete doherty and babyshambles is one of my favourite bands actually. I hate all the fallout boy/my chemical romance/panic at the disco/lostprophets pop punk emo crap that's on tv all the time. I hate this kind of music a lot more than the flood of brit pop bands (I don't hate brit pop, I do like some bands) that are o so hip at the moment. That emo crap really grinds my gears.  >:( :P
