I had never seen that live performance. I really liked I Become Small And Go, and still do. Take Back The Universe was disappointing to me largely because it was mastered soooo loud.

The subsequent stuff I liked a lot less.
I have an EP of a band named "On the Speakers" which was the 2 main guys in CL. It's just 6 songs, but it has the same basic sound as them and it's great. It was actually our introduction to them.
Oh yeah. Forgot about that one.

Hasn't the internet killed the very idea of the unsung hero? When I was a teenager there was so much dumb luck involved in discovering new music to love, as well as countless cases of records you'd heard of but had no way of hearing. With all the connectivity nowadays it seems pretty likely that you'll find lots of people who do love the bands you might think of as obscure, in the comments section below the YouTube video if nowhere else.

Bu since I'm not above joining in this game I'll nominate The Incredible String Band, The Times, and The Move.

I've been meaning to give the Move a little try. The only thing I really know about them is Cheap Trick's cover of "California Man".
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

Anybody like Pell Mell? The 80s-90s US instrumental band, not the 70s German prog band with the same name.

I've loved them since finding them in 1995, on the DGC compilation album Buy Product. I bought their album Interstate right after that, which is an absolute classic for me. These guys kicked off my love of instrumental music. Before I got into Post-Rock and Surf a few years later, I listened to Pell Mell. Somehow I was lucky enough to find most of rest of their catalog on cd during a visit to Amoeba Music in SF in 2000.

If you ever watched the HBO show Six Feet Under, you've probably heard their song Nothing Lies Still Long, which was used for "previously on" recaps for the first few seasons.

Anyway, here's a few choice cuts for you. I hope you like them.

record store performance of Blacktop from Interstate
Spy vs Spy from Rhyming Guitars
New Saigon from Rhyming Guitars
Par Avion from For Years We Stood Clearly as One Thing
Drift from Interstate : the section between 2:25 - 3:15 is just perfect and makes me so happy when I hear it.

I’ve been meaning to check them out, I heard Swoon on the Kids In The Hall soundtrack and loved it! Going to check out Interstate on my way home today

24 Gone. They released one album (The Spin) in 1990 and it is perfect.

24 Gone - The Spin
I own this on blue vinyl, KILLER record.
I used to be cool, now I just complain about prices.

Cass McCombs.

He's my favorite songwriter and guitarist hands down. Yet, no one I know seems to care for him at all...
I used to get drunk with him sometimes, nice dude

I think that's from their 'heavy' period, which I'm not so keen on (though there are some great pop songs on their later releases too). For me the real gold is in their pop-psychedelic phase (eponymous 1st LP and early singles mainly) which established Roy Wood's credentials as a genius song writer, particularly of middle eights, which others might give their eye teeth to have as a verse or chorus, that can jump off at crazy tangents before resolving perfectly back to the next verse.

Case in point!

Timber Timbre.
I think they got a bit of Attention bc one of their Songs was on "Breaking Bad", but not enough in my Opinion.

and Deerhunter. Love them so much. Sure, they were hyped when Halcyion Digest dropped, but afterwards not that much.

Ouff!! The Times, proper blast from the past "whatever happened to thames beat" Bought there Pure Lp on the strength of that track.. When I played it I thought eh! Is this the same band?
Luv A side but im gonna revisit the B as it didnt grab me back in the day..

Move, Classic.
Walk upon the water is stand out on 1st LP and often noodle "I can hear the grass grow" on my XIIs Roy wood style.

The Stares were an amazing Seattle band that never got their due. They made very ambitious, sprawling chamber pop-type stuff. 8,000 Feet is one of my favorite songs of all time. Both records are also available on the usual streaming services.

Jason the drummer and Bill on pedal steel went on to join one of my other favorite Seattle bands Loose Wing, though Jason had since left LW.
